Setting Up Miscellaneous Internet Software Packages
FamilyClick is able to provide a safe Internet experience for your family by directing all network traffic from your computer to our servers. Our servers then go out to the Internet for you and get the material that you requested. In the process, inappropriate material is screened out. The FamilyClick servers that perform this service are commonly known as proxy servers.
In order for this to work correctly, the software that you use to communicate on the Internet needs to be configured to use these proxy servers. The primary software packages, such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, are included on the FamilyClick CD and are correctly set up when you install FamilyClick. Other network software packages, which you might purchase or download, will need to be manually configured before they will work correctly.
It is impossible for us to provide specific configuration instructions for every software package that is available. For some of the most common packages, such as Real Player and the various instant messaging packages, FamilyClick provides tutorials to guide you step by step through the configuration process. For other packages, we are providing general instructions with a few actual examples included.
General Configuration Instructions
Traffic on the Internet is transmitted using many different protocols. Some of the most popular protocols are HTTP and HTTPS for web browsing, SMTP and POP for electronic mail and FTP for file transfers. This is by no means an exhaustive list as there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of protocols in use on the Internet today. Some vendors use their own proprietary protocols to communicate on the Internet. FamilyClick provides filtering proxy servers that are able to deal with most of the standard protocols. We also provide a generic, non-filtering proxy server known as a socks proxy that can handle some of the less common and non-standard protocols.
Any piece of software that communicates on the Internet will need to be told which proxy servers to use. Most packages offer a method of configuring the package to work in different environments. These are often known as Preferences or Options and can be found under the Edit, Setup or Tools menus. The Preferences and Options screens often organize the items that can be configured into different categories. These categories are selected by clicking on a tab or button. The proxy settings are normally found under a category labeled as “Connection” or “Proxy”.
Some software packages have the ability to use the same proxy settings as your browser. If your software has such a feature, we recommend that you try it before attempting to manually configure the proxy settings.
When entering proxy server information, you generally will need to supply the name of the proxy server and the port number. The proxy servers provided by FamilyClick are shown in the following table:
| Protocol | Server Name | Port | Notes | | HTTP | proxyfilter. | 8002 | Default web browser proxy | | HTTPS | proxyfilter. | 8002 | Secure HTTP | | FTP | ftp-proxy. | 8002 | File transfer protocol | | PNA | ra-proxy. | 1090 | Real Audio | | RTSP | ra-proxy. | 1091 | Real Audio | | other | socks-proxy1. | 1080 | Authentication required |
Use the server name and port number that corresponds to the protocol used by the package that you are setting up. Some packages may require more than one proxy server; i.e. TurboTax uses an HTTP proxy server most of the time but uses an HTTPS proxy server for securely transmitting your tax return across the network.
If your software uses a protocol not listed above, you can try using socks-proxy1.. A socks proxy is a generic proxy server that is not specifically tied to a particular network protocol. This server can handle some of the less common or proprietary protocols. The socks proxy server does require that you be authorized to use it; see our directions on setting up Instant Messaging products for more information. FamilyClick's socks proxy server uses version 5 of the socks protocol; it will not work with software packages that only support earlier versions of socks.
It is entirely possible that some software packages cannot be made to work in the safe FamilyClick environment. Such packages would include those that perform point to point communication and have no provision for using a proxy server. Others would include packages using a protocol not supported by the socks proxy server.
Specific setup instructions for some popular software packages follow. By providing setup instructions for a software package, FamilyClick is not recommending it over other packages nor are we providing any guarantee that it will work in our environment. Most vendors are very familiar with proxy servers and should be able to help should you have any questions that are not answered here.
Anti-Virus Packages
Anti-virus software protects your system by monitoring all incoming messages and files for commonly known viruses. Anti-virus software should work correctly without any special configuration. However, as new viruses are discovered, most vendors will provide software updates that need to be downloaded from a central site. Unless configured for the FamilyClick environment, the anti-virus software may be unable to download these updates.
McAfee VirusScan
McAfee's automatic update feature is used to download updated virus definition files. To configure this to use a proxy server, bring up the Scheduler and select AutoUpdate. Under the Task menu, select Properties. Click on the Program tab and then click on the Configure button. Click on Edit. Select the option “Use proxy server”. Enter "ftp-proxy." as the proxy server name and "8002" as the port. The option “Use anonymous FTP login” should also be selected.
Norton Anti-Virus
To configure Norton Anti-Virus to use the FamilyClick proxy server, bring up the Anti-Virus console and select Live Update. Then select Options, Internet and, finally, Proxy Server . The name of the proxy server to use is "ftp-proxy." and the port number is "8002". If the option “Use Anonymous FTP” is present, make sure it is selected.
Norton Anti-Virus may include an option to use the proxy settings of Internet Explorer. If this is the case, you should be able to select this option instead of manually entering the information as described above.
File Sharing Software
File sharing software lets users share files such as music and video files with each other over the Internet. The most famous of the file sharing services is Napster but there are a number of others as well. These services generally allow users to download files from each other's computers. File sharing services also generally include chat and/or instant messaging features.
FamilyClick recommends caution when selecting and setting up a file sharing service. When you install file sharing software and register with their service, you are granting other users of the service direct access to files stored on your computer. For example, when you install Napster, it will search for MP3 files residing on your computer and information about any files it finds will be entered in the Napster database. Other users can then download these files directly from your computer while you are online and have Napster running. Other registered users may be able to contact you using the integrated chat or instant messaging functions. We recommend that you not use a file sharing service unless you fully understand how the software works and are comfortable with the service's privacy policies.
CuteMX
CuteMX is intended to share all types of files; not just audio or video files. To set up CuteMX to work with FamilyClick, first you need to enable Instant Messaging access through the Administer Family function. Once that's done, go to the CuteMX Edit menu and select Settings Under Connection Options select Socks/Firewall Support. Under Socks Support, select Socks5. Enter socks-proxy1. in the Host field and 1080 in the Port field. Click the box labeled "Use user/password for Socks5 proxy" then enter the username and password for the FamilyClick administrator. Finally, under Incoming Connections, select "I am behind firewall".
Imesh
Imesh currently has proxy support only for a SOCKS4 type proxy. Since FamilyClick does not provide SOCKS4 proxy servers, the current version of Imesh cannot be used with FamilyClick.
Napster
Napster is designed to facilitate the sharing of music files stored in the MP3 format. Napster is still considered beta (test) software and, as such, is subject to change frequently. Also, at the time of this writing, a pending court order may severely curtail, or even shutdown, the Napster service. To set up Napster, you need to have Instant Messaging enabled for your family. Once this is done, select Preferences from Napster's File menu. Click on the Proxy tab to display a window similar to that shown. Set the Proxy type to SOCKS 5 proxy server. The Proxy Server name is socks-proxy1. and the Proxy Port is 1080. Enter the username and password of the family administrator account. Make sure the File Transfer field is set to "Download files through proxy". Click on OK to complete the Napster setup.
Financial and Accounting Software
Financial and accounting software packages need to communicate on the net to check stock prices, bank account balances etc. Software that features bill paying services also need to be able to communicate with your bank and often with a central server.
Quicken Deluxe 2000
To set up Quicken Deluxe 2000, go to the Edit Menu and Select Internet Connection Setup. The next window that pops up will ask about the type of Internet connection that you have. Here, you'll need to tell a little white lie. Select the option labeled "I have a direct Internet Connection". This probably isn't true as FamilyClick subscribers have dialup connections. But since proxy servers are most often associated with users having direct connections, Quicken assumes that dialup users have no need for proxy servers. Once you've selected the direct connect option, click on the Next button. It will then ask you to select which browser you wish to use with Quicken. If you use more than one browser, Quicken recommends that you select Microsoft Internet Explorer. Continue until you reach the window for entering the proxy server information.
Quicken wants the names of two servers; an http proxy and a secure proxy. The answer for each is the same; proxyfilter.. Use 8002 as the port number for each. These proxy servers do not require any authentication so do not click on the button marked Authentication.
The final step concerns whether or not diagnostic information will be sent to Quicken as you are using the product. While we have no specific recommendation for this step, the default answer is Yes.
Phone Answering Services
These services answer your phone for you while you're online or when you're not at home. These services fall into three categories: those that email the recorded messages to your mail account, those that provide a web page that you can log into to hear the messages and those that provide software that plays the messages for you on your computer. There should be no problem getting the first two types to work with FamilyClick; as long as you have the correct audio software installed you should be able to hear the messages.
Services that provide specialized software may not work or may require special setups. These applications access the messages from a specialized server; the software will need to use the proxy servers provided by FamilyClick in order to do this.
CallWave
CallWave works with the "Call Forward On Busy" feature of your home phone line to direct incoming calls to the CallWave servers when you're phone is busy. The messages are then heard on your computer speakers by using the Callwave software. According to CallWave technical support, this software does not support the use of proxies. Therefore, it will not work with FamilyClick.
Pagoo
Pagoo is another service that answers your phone while it's busy and plays back the messages using custom software. To configure Pagoo to use the FamilyClick proxy server, start the Pagoo player and click on menu; then select Properties. In the Properties window, click on Internet. Enter "proxyfilter." as the name of the HTTP Proxy Server and "8002" as the Port number.
Tax Preparation Packages
Tax preparation software needs to communicate on the Internet in order to electronically file tax returns with the IRS and state tax departments. It can also download updated tax forms, tax laws and program updates from the software vendor. If tax preparation software cannot communicate correctly on the Internet, it may still be usable if it is a recent copy, but you would not be able to file your returns electronically. Because of the rapidly changing tax laws, our recommendation is not to use any tax preparation software unless you can configure it to communicate properly on the Internet.
Quicken TurboTax
To configure TurboTax, go to the Online menu and select Internet Connection Setup. In the next window that up, click the Next button. The next window that appears will present you with three options: “I have an existing dial-up Internet connection”, “I have a direct Internet connection” and “No, I need an Internet connection”. The first option; I have a dial-up, is the default and is the one you would be most likely to select. However, to properly configure TurboTax, you need to select the option labeled “I have a direct Internet connection”. Even though this isn't true, select it and click Next.
TurboTax will now detect which browsers are installed on your system. If you have more than one, select the one you wish to use with TurboTax. If you only have one browser installed, it will be the only one shown. Click Next.
You should finally be at the screen where you enter information about your proxy server. There are two proxy servers that need to be defined; an HTTP proxy and a Security proxy. The name of the server for both is "proxyfilter." and the port for both is "8002". Do not select the option labeled “Check here if you want to use the above settings for your browser”. Your browser should already be properly configured. Also, do not click on the button marked Authentication. You are already authenticated as a result of dialing into FamilyClick. Click on Next.
The final step concerns whether or not diagnostic information will be sent to Quicken as you are using the product. While we have no specific recommendation for this step, the default answer is Yes.
