The Star Spangled Banner - The banner that inspired Key's poem is now in the Smithsonian's Museum of American History. It's 42 feet across and 30 feet high, and it was a major sewing job for Mary Pickersgill and her daughter, back in 1813. She was commissioned to make a huge flag to fly over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. It was to be so big that "the British would have no trouble seeing it from a distance." The stars alone are two feet across! The flag's original cost was $405.90. Over the years, the flag's condition has deteriorated, and now there's an effort underway to conserve and preserve this unique American treasure. Keep up on the project's progress, which is expected to last another two years.
