Family Time That Matters:

Volunteering for the Great American Cleanup

Chase away the winter blues this spring by volunteering your family for the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup. With a little elbow grease and a lot of inspiration, you can put a shine on your community and teach your kids a valuable lesson in personal responsibility.

The Great American Cleanup, held March - May, is the country's largest grassroots beautification, litter prevention and community improvement event. Each spring people join forces to pick up, plant, paint and recycle - whatever it takes to improve the quality of life in their local communities. Volunteering is free and the quality time with your kids is priceless! Here are some examples of Great American Cleanup activities that families can take part in. Some of them may be happening near you.

Young volunteers plant
flowers in a park during

PAINT THE TOWN CLEAN - Erase that illegal writing on the wall by joining a community paintbrush mural.

VOLUNTEER TO BEAUTIFY A BIKE TRAIL - Help plant flowers and shrubs along your favorite trail.

JOIN A CLOTHES COLLECTION - Round up your family's clean clothes for a donation. Check with your local Keep America Beautiful affiliate for a drop-off location.

HELP TURN A VACANT LOT INTO A COMMUNITY PARK - Join volunteers in a community project in which kids of all ages can reap the rewards.

By supporting these hands-on, action-oriented activities, the following organizations are investing in improving communities across America during the Great American Cleanup 2001 -- National Sponsors: GAIN, Green Forest Recycled Paper Products from Georgia-Pacific, Pepsi-Cola Company, Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company and Yard-Man by MTD; Retail Sponsors: Hy-Vee, Inc., The Kroger Company and Publix Super Markets, Inc.; Educational Partners: America Online, Scrap Tire Management Council and Songmasters - The American Road.

The Great American Cleanup is a signature event led nationally by Keep America Beautiful. Established in 1953, Keep America Beautiful is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising public awareness about litter prevention and motivating people to clean up, beautify and improve their neighborhoods.
