African-American Mosaic Exhibition (Library of Congress) - This exhibit is a sampler of materials found in the Library of Congress illuminating the last 500 years of the African American experience in the Western Hemisphere. This exhibit covers four areas--Colonization, Abolition, Migrations, and the WPA (Work Projects Administration) era. This is an excellent starting point to search for materials about African American history. Be sure to check the AFRICAN AMERICANS section of this book, too.

Cats! Wild to Mild - The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County had an all-cat exhibit in 1997. Encyclopedia-type entries for 19 feline species from around the world--including jaguars, lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats, and wildcats, as well as house pets--are represented here on their Web site. You can see wonderful color pictures of the cats, plus range distribution maps for each. Many of them are endangered species; for example, only 50 Florida panthers are estimated to be left in the wild. Some still exist on the Web, though: you'll find a collection of links for each species. Do you have a cat? Chances are that you do or that you know someone who does. About 65.8 million cats live in the United States, which beats the 54.9 million dogs. Garfield would be so pleased!

Global Children's Art Gallery - The Natural Child Project - Would you like to see pictures drawn by kids from all over the world? You can even send in your own artwork, if you're between the ages of 1 and 12. Check the vibrant energy in "Jamaican Dancing" or the cool fish and creatures in "El Mar (The Sea)." If you can't send in an electronic picture, you can mail a photograph.

Monet at Giverny - Turn of the century French artist Claude Monet is famous for his garden and water lily paintings. His garden at Giverny has been reproduced online so you can stroll about and see where some of Monet's works were created. Select either the flower or water garden and begin your exploration. As you move the miniature Monet around, photographs, paintings, and facts will appear. See if you can find a painting of a Japanese bridge.

National Gallery of Canada - Virtual Tour - This multimedia site lets you wander through virtual galleries of Canadian painters with a knowledgeable guide by your side. If you have Real Audio, you will be able to hear the guide's narration. But even if you want to take a silent tour, the vibrant pictures will astound you.

NextMonet.com - Featuring expert advice, collecting tips and the largest selection of contemporary fine art, original paintings, prints and photographs for sale online.

Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) - Can you picture an art museum that's completely outside? Murals are paintings on buildings, and they turn the outdoors into an art gallery. Some of the best mural artists are Latino. In the past, many Latino artists couldn't get their work placed in art museums. Instead, they painted walls, hallways--all kinds of places--producing some beautiful murals. In Los Angeles, with its large Latino population, there are many, many murals. Take a tour of some of the best of these murals, and see what an outdoor art museum looks like.

WebMuseum: Bienvenue! (Welcome from the Curator) - Browse through an incredible collection of famous paintings and other artwork. See the Mona Lisa, the most recognized piece of art in the world, or listen to some classical music in the auditorium. You can even take a minitour of Paris! Theng page of the WebMuseum includes a list of its mirror sites. Choose one close to you to provide a faster connection.
