AAA Online - Throughout the U.S. and Canada, AAA/CAA offers its members a variety of services and benefits. Be in touch with your local AAA office anytime with AAA Online.
Automotive Learning Online - Ever wondered exactly how a V-8 engine works? Or how the brakes respond when you press on the pedal? Wonder no longer. Animations of belts, pistons, crankshafts, and other parts of the internal combustion engine, and other automotive systems, are illustrated at this site. Bring up a graphic of, say, the heating and air conditioning system. See all those hot spots on the picture? Click on them to bring up more information. If you see a picture of a magnifying glass, that means there is another graphic and even more detail to be seen. Look, is that a bug on the windshield?
Automotive: Makes and Models - The Yahoo directory of car manufacturers lists familiar names, such as General Motors, Toyota, and Volkswagen. You'll also find the Kia, the DeLorean, and the Rolls Royce--they are all here. Hey, there are even some links on Hummers! Naturally, this vast array of links has not been checked for family-friendliness, so your mileage may vary.
Car and Driver Online - Cars are fun to look at and interesting to talk about; Car and Driver magazine writes about them every month. Driving is fun too, unless you get stuck in traffic. You may not be a driver yet, but you know you will be. You need a place to find out what's happening in the world of cars this year, this month, today! This site has great resource information on every kind of car you can think of, and it also has Daily Auto Insider with today's news on cars (look in the News area). There's a whole section on car shows--it's all here. Drive on in, there's a parking space!
Car Talk - Would you let Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers, work on your family car? They have a very funny radio show, newspaper column, and Web site all about car maintenance and repair. And oh, yes, they used to run a garage in Cambridge, Massachusetts; now, only one brother works there (the other one got tired of breathing exhaust fumes). The Web site has clips from the radio show, advice columns, and other useful stuff, like car reviews, a directory of truly great mechanics, and--what's this?--a guide to raising kids. Maybe they should stick to cars!
Car-Stuff - The Web's Most Complete Source of Automotive Links - Car-Stuff makes it easy to find manufacturers, parts & accessories, sales, racing, clubs, museums, publications, info, links, and more.
eAuto: Everything Automotive - eAuto is a comprehensive automotive site featuring a directory, car buying services, vehicle history and credit reports, financing, insurance, extended warranties, Web site reviews and headline news.
Great Picture Book of Construction Equipment - Looking for a field guide to construction equipment? Dig into this one and learn how to distinguish (for example) a mud bulldozer from one that works better in a woodlot. There are QuickTime movies so you can watch them move, too! The picture book includes dump trucks, hydraulic excavators, bulldozers, cranes, front loaders, and lots of other things that dig, move, shovel, and tow.
Motor Trend - The other big car magazine is Motor Trend , and this is its online version. You'll find reports from car shows, a car buyer's guide, a performance database, Car of the Year listings, links to car clubs, and a lot more.
Otto Club - The California State Automobile Association has a terrific site to help very young kids learn about traffic safety. Visit Otto the car and his interactive town. Talk about street smarts--Otto is a real know-it-all! There is a full-featured animation and sound version or a lighter version for those who believe less is more. Sing along with the Seat Belt Song by pressing the radio buttons on Otto's dashboard. Play the traffic light game, and see if you can compare the two pictures and decide who's stopped for red, based on the signals YOU can see. There are little games on helmet safety and playground safety, too. Be sure to click on the question mark in each area, though, to find out what you can do in each section.
Popular Mechanics: Automotive - You can see next year's models now and classic cars too? This must be the PM Zone's Automotive section, where you can get the latest on all the cars out there from Popular Mechanics magazine. Popular Mechanics surveys users and reports on cars, which means that you get the real story on how the cars perform from the people who drive them and not just from the manufacturer. They report on every kind of car--from Ferrari Spiders to Dodge Caravans--and they spy on the new models, so you can be among the first to know about them. There's also a section on classic cars as well as one on motorcycles. Don't miss what's new in automotive technology, plastic cars, and new types of fuel cells. Check the article on "Kidracers." Put the key in, start `er up, and head into the PM Zone.
So You Want to Make a Car... - Have you ever wondered how cars are made? This site takes you through all the steps, saving you from walking the 16 miles of conveyors that transfer car bodies from start to finish. That's more than 230 football fields in length! At this auto factory, over 260 programmable robots install, weld, and paint in order for those shiny new vehicles to roll off the line. Look over their shoulders (or whatever robots have) and see how cars are built. There are also some great links on car history, solar cars, and race cars.
