Center For Media Education - Here's an interesting statistic. By age 70, most Americans will have spent ten years of their lives watching TV. Kids watch an average of three to four hours of TV every day. According to this site, "By the time children complete elementary school, the average child will witness more than 100,000 acts of violence on TV, including 8,000 murders. These numbers double to 200,000 acts of violence and 16,000 murders by the time they graduate from high school." What effect does watching this violence have on kids? Read about it at this site. Did you know the Federal Communications Commission requires TV stations to air three hours of educational and informational programming per week? This site tells you how to keep local TV stations accountable to the rules. There are also sections on how to teach kids to evaluate TV commercials and how to safeguard Internet privacy.

Consumer Education for Teens - This site was developed by a class of high school students in Des Moines, Washington. It's right on the money when it comes to answering questions and concerns about investing your hard-earned cash. How much do you know about bank accounts and credit cards? How do you avoid being cheated when you buy merchandise? Learn how to tell the difference between scholarship scams and the real thing. Do you really think you can get rich quick? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Consumer Information Center, Pueblo, Colorado - Are you on a limited budget? Learn how to stretch it a bit further with publications from the Consumer Information Center. Many of them are right on this page in text or HTML format. Or you can order the publications online and have them sent to you. You can also find pamphlets on how to help your kids learn to read, book lists of great reading for kids, info on colleges, mortgages, online scams, birdhouses, landscaping, and more.

Consumer World: Everything Consumer - OK, you've bought that skateboard you've been wanting. Now it won't even roll! Hustle over to this site to find out what you can do about it. It doesn't matter that you're a kid. You have consumer power, and manufacturers listen to consumers, regardless of their age. While you're there, you can also find out how to avoid online scams, determine whether the skateboard has been recalled, and link to the Better Business Bureau. FDA/CFSAN on Cosmetics - The US Food and Drug Administration provides information on shelf-life expiration dates, understanding labels and more on cosmetics.

Good Bears of the World - Have you offered a bear hug today? There are lots of lonely kids and others who could use a bear hug, and this organization tries to give it to them. You can join a "bear den" near you and help raise money to buy teddy bears for distribution to local hospitals, police departments, and senior citizen homes. This nonprofit organization has affiliates worldwide; there is a directory at this site.

Home & Consumer Solutions - Advice on cleaning, laundry, stain removal and proper disposal of household waste.

Kidd Safety - The Consumer Product Safety Commission wants you to try all of "Kidd" Safety's games. (He's a little cartoon goat. His name is Kidd. Get it?) Look for the dangerous situations around the house. Do you see one? Good--now click on it and play a concentration-style matching game. After that you can try a word search puzzle or try to skateboard to the park while picking up safety equipment and avoiding branches and squirrels. You have 90 seconds--GO!

Kidz Privacy - Whether playing, shopping, studying or just surfing, today's kids are taking advantage of all that the web has to offer. But when it comes to their personal information online, who's in charge? In an effort to put parents in the catbird seat, the Federal Trade Commission has established new rules for website operators to make sure that kids' privacy is protected while they're online. These rules are part of the 1998 Children's Online Privacy Protection Act Discover more here!

Make-a-Wish Foundation of America - Founded in the belief that lives are measured by memories and not by years, the Make-a-Wish Foundation has granted more than 50,000 wishes to American children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 who have terminal illnesses or life-threatening medical conditions. Since the first wish (granted in 1980 for a seven-year-old boy with terminal leukemia who wanted to be a policeman), 81 chapters have sprung up around the U.S. With the family's participation, the Foundation is committed to providing a memorable and carefree experience for these children, whose wishes are limited only by their own imaginations. If you know someone who would like to make a special wish, check the Chapter Listing to find the Make-a-Wish chapter nearest you. One of the most frequently requested wishes is to travel to Disneyland or Disney World, but many unusual wishes have been granted, and you can read about them here. Also, be sure to check out the story of Craig Shergold. Long ago, he had a life-threatening brain tumor and asked that people send him greeting cards so that he could get into the Guinness Book of World Records. They did. Then he had surgery and (hooray!) fully recovered. Trouble is, those original requests are still floating around the Internet! You may receive a request from a friend; tell your friend the truth. The Shergold family is swimming in cards, and they want it to stop. Make-a-Wish was never involved with the original request, but you'll find the whole story explained here about this Net chain letter.
