Republic of Croatia - Parental advisory: Please preview this site. Imagine you are in an airplane. You are flying low over the coast of Croatia. When you look down, you see the magnificent blue of the Adriatic Sea set off by steep cliffs, dark green trees, and white stone buildings of cities like Dubrovnik and Zadar. Then you visit the eastern border town of Slavonski Brod and the Serbian-occupied city of Vukovar. This sensitive map lets you click on many of the Croatian cities to see aerial photos, get historical chronologies, and learn about famous personalities. What stories do the ancient Roman ruins and archaeological items reveal about Croatia's historical heritage? The Croatian people are also dedicated to the preservation of their musical folklore. You may want to take a quick detour to learn about the stringed tamburitza , the most popular and most common Croatian folk instrument.

The City of Split - Because of its central position on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, the country of Croatia, and specifically the district of Split and Dalmatia, have always had an important cultural and historical role. The Roman emperor Diocletian built his spectacular limestone palace in the year 295, near Salona (present day Solin), which was then the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. During the Middle Ages, Diocletian's palace became the center of the medieval town of Split. The palace has been recognized and preserved as a famous architectural and cultural monument, and today it is on UNESCO's World Cutural Heritage list. Jump back in time and brush up on your Roman history with this brief entry about the life of Emperor Diocletian. Enter the huge courtyard, or peristyle , of the palace. You will think you have been transplanted back in time as you look at the carved door frames or parts of Diocletian's mausoleum, which in later centuries became the site of a Christian cathedral.
