Farm Animals
4-H Farm Animal Awareness Workbook - Goats, cattle, horses, rabbits, swine, chickens, and turkeys are some of the animals you might find on a farm. This site gives you an overview of each of these animals, what they eat, how they are raised, and how we use them. Did you know baby turkeys are called poults ? They eat corn, milo, soybean meal, and oats. Some of these pages include audio files and links to other sources of information.
Bacon's Life - Does the thought of swine make you swoon? Does having a pig as a pet make your day? Then a pot-bellied pig is the way to go. Read about where the pot-bellied pig came from, see other people's pigs, and join the Pot-Bellied Pig List, where you can talk to others who think hogs are heaven.
Breeds of Livestock - Oklahoma State University's breed archive is extensive. You'll find pictures and info on breeds of the following animals: horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and poultry. Oh, yes, did we mention the "other" category? There you'll find llamas, donkeys, and--buffalo! But let's talk cattle. Everyone's heard of the Jersey cow: "With an average weight of 900 pounds, the Jersey produces more pounds of milk per pound of body weight than any other breed." They have a nice photo here, too. Have you ever heard of the Australian Friesian Sahiwal? It's a breed being developed in Australia for use in tropical areas. How about the Florida Cracker/Pineywoods, the Florida equivalent of the Texas longhorn? Visit this site for a virtual barnyard of breeds.
Davis' Farmland - Listen to farm animals, color in their pictures, solve farm word puzzles and mazes, send a friend a virtual postcard and shut the barn door before the horse escapes!
Farm Animals - Games, sounds, coloring pages and poems all featuring your favorite farm animals.
Farm Animals Coloring Pages - Coloring pages of farm animals from all around the world. There are also many other coloring pages of different types of animals on this great site from Enchanted Learning.
Farm School - Farmers need lots of skills to run a successful operation. They have to be good at math, for example. Want to see how well you'd do? This Web site lets you figure out how much that new combine equipment will cost, if you take out a loan from the bank. And farmers have to know quite a bit about the farm's ecosystem--how the animals relate to the water system, how the weeds relate to the soil, and other connections. Can you draw a chain connecting that box of cereal on your shelf to the corn crop in the field? After you visit this site you'll be able to do that and much more.
Farmer Brown's Backwards Farm - Help!! Farmer Brown doesn't know how to run a farm. All of his animals live in the wrong places, eat all the wrong foods and have to do the wrong jobs. The animals are really getting tired of doing things backwards. One day while Farmer Brown was sleeping, the animals escaped and ran to the nearby zoo where they got all mixed up with the animals there. No one is sure who belongs where. We really need your help to get all the farm animals back where they belong.
Goats and More Goats - It has some quirky habits, smells a little, and has been hanging around you all day. Do you call the police? No, all the poor goat wants is a good scratch between the shoulders! The Irvine Masa Charros 4-H Club raises dairy and pygmy goats and knows what a rewarding experience raising goats can be. With the dedication and knowledge demonstrated at this site, how can anyone not approve of these kids raising kids? Never heard of 4-H before? Check the ORGANIZATIONS section of this book.
Kids Farm - Any idea what the difference is between alfalfa and regular grass? Familiar with the sounds a turkey makes? Did you know you should stay away from the back of a horse and the front of a bull? You'll know the answers to these perennial questions if you visit this site. You'll also become an expert on farm equipment and learn all about hay baling and other fun on a working Colorado farm.
Moo Milk - Cows make milk to feed their baby calves, but even after the baby is eating other food, the cow continues to make up to eight gallons of milk a day. Cows are milked in a special room called a milking parlor, and their milk is pumped to stainless steel holding tanks and immediately chilled to 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Then the milk tanker truck comes to pick it up. This happens twice a day. When it gets to the milk processing facility, the milk goes through two other steps--homogenization and pasteurization--but you'll have to read about those at the Virtual Tour. You'll find cow-related Shockwave games and other fun at the main level, address below.
Pigs - Are you interested in raising pigs for fun and/or profit? Four-H members learn integrity, good sportsmanship, and communication through raising hogs. Investigate the steps required to start your own pig-raising venture, what breeds are available, and how to care for these large but gentle swine. And don't forget the added bonus (who needs the health spa): unlimited free mud baths! Never heard of 4-H before? Check the ORGANIZATIONS section of this book.
Sheep - If you are looking for a farm animal to raise, take a good look at the multipurpose sheep. Stay warm with wool sweaters made from their fleece. Feast on cheese produced from their milk. Stop mowing the lawn; instead, let sheep keep your grass closely clipped. Get your daily exercise by walking a mile a day with your lamb. Make a profit when you take them to the market. "BAAAAAA!" OK, the sheep request that you skip that last one. Here is where 4-H members show you how fun and rewarding sheep raising can be. Never heard of 4-H before? Check the ORGANIZATIONS section of this book.
