Hanukkah - Festival of Lights - It's the year 165 B.C., and after a three-year struggle, the Jews in Judea have successfully defeated the Syrian tyrant, Antiochus. Now they are ready to hold festivities and celebrate the reclaiming of their Temple, but only a very small bottle of oil is left with which to light all the holy lamps. Miraculously, this small amount of oil lasts for eight days. Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, involves the lighting of candles each night for eight days during a special ceremony. Every year, Jewish families celebrate Hanukkah by lighting candles held by a menorah , a candleholder with nine branches. And, just like the holiday celebrations of other cultures, there are special foods and music for Hannukah. It's all here: the history, the goodies, and three traditional Hanukkah songs with music and lyrics, in both English and Hebrew. You'll even find a pattern for making a dreidel (a four-sided spinning top), which is part of a traditional children's game of luck.
