African Rhinoceros - It may be a little thick-skinned, but its reputation for aggressiveness is totally overblown. Normally timid and with no natural enemies, a white rhino will charge only when confronted. Yet the loss of home and poaching of its horns has nearly destroyed its population. Here you can learn more about this rhino and its relatives and see how one organization is attempting to keep the 97 percent extinction rate from becoming 100 percent.

African Savannah: Grant's Zebra - What are the stripes for? What sounds do zebras make? The answers to these questions are at this site for you to enjoy.

Animal Bytes: Black Rhinoceros - Only several thousand of these animals exist on the planet today. Some people believe that the rhino "horn" has medicinal properties, and the animals are killed by poachers who want to harvest the horn. The rhino "horn" isn't attached to the skull, and it's made out of keratin (the same substance found in fingernails), so it is not a true horn at all. Some zoos, such as the San Diego Wild Animal Park, have had some success breeding these animals, but they will never return to the wild, since their habitat is mostly gone.

Animal Bytes: Grevy's Zebra - Did you know that each zebra's stripe pattern is as unique as a fingerprint? Zebras help other plant-eaters on the grassland plains, since they eat the coarse forage at the top of plants, leaving the tender new growth for other animals.

Elephanteria - Do you love elephants? This is probably the site you'll like best. Not only can you find information on these precious pachyderms, but also there's an elephant dance and an elephant cake and cookies! (Look in the Elephant Day area.)

Herds of Information About Zebras - Some great photographs of zebras are found on the links from this page, and you'll also find info on the various zebra species, including the extinct quagga. But there is hope for its restoration.

Zebras - Meet some Damaraland zebras at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington. They have not only black-and-white stripes but also brownish "shadow" stripes. This camouflage helps them disappear in the sun-on-shifting-grasslands habitat of their native Africa. You'll learn a lot about the natural history of zebras and also something you probably did not know about legendary rock star Jimi Hendrix and why a plaque in his honor is at the Seattle zoo.
