TopClicks -> Money -> Family Finances -> Consumer Information

Better Business Bureau Central Web Server for U.S. and Canada - The Better Business Bureau's mission is to promote and foster the highest ethical relationship between business and the public. Check out this site to find the latest tips, alerts to scams and news. Check out the resource library for buying guides, consumer and business alerts, resolving disputes, vacation and travel and even planning a wedding. There is a wealth of information here.

Bloomburg.com - Large compendium of global, business, and financial news. Read articles, and see graphs and photos.

Consumer Education for Teens - This site was developed by a class of high school students in Des Moines, Washington. It's right on the money when it comes to answering questions and concerns about investing your hard-earned cash. How much do you know about bank accounts and credit cards? How do you avoid being cheated when you buy merchandise? Learn how to tell the difference between scholarship scams and the real thing. Do you really think you can get rich quick? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Consumer Information Center, Pueblo, Colorado - Are you on a limited budget? Learn how to stretch it a bit further with publications from the Consumer Information Center. Many of them are right on this page in text or HTML format. Or you can order the publications online and have them sent to you. You can also find pamphlets on how to help your kids learn to read, book lists of great reading for kids, info on colleges, mortgages, online scams, birdhouses, landscaping, and more.

Consumer Reports Online - Consumer Reports is a nonprofit organization that tests appliances, audio and TV equipment, cameras, cars, and all sorts of other things. They issue their opinions on which items are the best, based on the results of the tests they run on competing products. They accept no advertising in their magazine, so you can really trust what they have to say. Next time you want to buy something, see if it has been reviewed lately. You'll be glad you did. By the way, be sure to tell your parents this is online.

Consumer World: Everything Consumer - OK, you've bought that skateboard you've been wanting. Now it won't even roll! Hustle over to this site to find out what you can do about it. It doesn't matter that you're a kid. You have consumer power, and manufacturers listen to consumers, regardless of their age. While you're there, you can also find out how to avoid online scams, determine whether the skateboard has been recalled, and link to the Better Business Bureau. You'll also find out how to contact many companies and other sources of consumer information. Be sure to show this site to your parents--they will love it.

Dr. Toy's Guide on the Internet - Quick quiz: What toys are appropriate for a two-year old? What toys are sure-fire winners for vacation travel? Do you know the best classic toys, audiotapes, or videotapes for children? Stuck scratching your head? Not to worry. Dr. Toy has it all figured out for you. The Institute for Childhood Resources presents this toychest packed with facts, reviews, and sage advice. Dr. Toy, also known as Dr. Stevanne Auerbach, is a well-known expert on toys, child development, and parent education. Her site is a must for busy parents!

Hoover's Online: The Business Network - The company information page links to approximately 14,000 companies for which Hoover's Online provides FREE information, including a corporate description, financial information, key officers, competitors and more.

Inflation Calculator - Inflation is an interesting concept. Lots of times you will hear an older person talk about "the good old days" and how much--actually, how little--something cost back then. This inflation calculator lets you figure out just how much monetary values have changed over the years. A nickel candy bar in 1959 (yes, they did cost just five cents then!) would be priced at 27 cents today. Actually, they cost more than that, don't they? How do you explain that? Anyway, one of those `59 candy bars would be pretty stale by now. You can also explain to your dad that the $5 weekly allowance he used to get should really be translated into more than $26 today!

Street Cents Online - Young people make money, save money, and spend money, just like everyone else! But sometimes there just isn't much advice for young people about handling their money. Do you spend money on entertainment, sports, music, and food? What's the deal on using horse shampoo on people? Does Duracell really outlast the Energizer bunny? All of these topics and more are covered by Street Cents, a popular Canadian television show. And now it's online in an informative and fun Web page. Many of these topics may be found in the archives section. Spend some time here!
