Holy Year 2000 - The Great Jubilee - Holy Year has been celebrated every 25 years from 1450 until the present time. The next one will be in the year 2000. People flock to Rome to ask forgiveness for their sins. They visit the great basilicas of St. Peter, St. Paul, St. John Lateran, and St. Mary Major. Catholics believe that participating in these special ceremonies will grant them indulgences, which remove the penalties for their past sinful behavior. Each basilica has a holy door, which is sealed except during the term of the Holy Year. Pilgrims pass through the holy doors, and at the end of the year, the doors are walled up to await the next jubilee. Learn the history of this holy event at this site.
