Bird Song - When you go on a bird watching hike, odds are you'll hear a lot more birds than you'll see. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to identify a bird by the sounds it makes? For example, you're out for a walk in the woods and you hear a bird that seems to be singing, "Sweet Canada, Canada, Canada"--instantly, you know that's a white-throated sparrow. Or maybe you're walking in the meadow and hear a high-pitched "Chortle-deeeeee," drawn out on that last syllable. You recognize at once that's a red-winged blackbird. How did you get so smart? You've memorized a list of birds and little hints to help you remember what their songs sound like. One's available on this home page! The fancy word for memory-joggers like these is mnemonics.

Bird Song Central: Birding By Ear - One way to identify birds is by listening to their songs or other vocalizations. To hear the audio files on this site you'll need the Real Player plug-in, but it's free and there's a link to the spot where you can get Real Player if you don't already have it available to your browser. Listen to the calls of 25 different species including the ones that seem to "say" their own names-like the bobwhite and chickadee. Admire the more complex avian composers such as the bobolink, described as "like R2D2 gone haywire!" Now that you've practiced, click on Bird Song Central at the bottom of the page to test your skills with the Bird Matcher game. There are six habitats, starting with backyard birds and moving to the marsh, the prairie, and the woodland. You'll be presented with four random birds from each habitat, and five different sounds. Your goal is to match each bird with its correct call. If you get them all right, you move on to the next habitat. There's a level of play for beginners and another one for advanced birders.

Bird Songs - Songs and calls of some New York State birds.

Bird Sounds Digitally Recorded - If you haven't found the bird song you're looking for at the previous sites, it's probably in this excellent collection. Besides birds, this intrepid adventurer records insects, animals, and other sounds. Find them all at this site, along with links to recordings of bird songs all over the world.

Greg Kunkel's birdsongs - A Web page dedicated to the recording of Bird vocalizations with simple, inexpensive equipment. You'll find a description of sonagrams for the identification of birds

Sound of the Week - What's that sound? Could it be a screaming phiha? Or was it a great potoo? Or maybe dad, snoring on the couch? Nope, it's just your sister listening to the bird sound of the week from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
