A Philippine Leaf - More than a thousand years ago, documents were written on leaves. In India and Southeast Asia, such communication was often made on palm leaves. Now, as we near a new millennium, a one-time aerospace computer systems engineer digs deeply into the ancient writing of the Philippines. He shares his results on the "leaf" of today's communication: the Web page. This site is rich in the history of the Philippines and Filipino writing systems, languages, and scripts that predate the Spaniards. Take a journey back to the ancient Philippines, "the way she was before the West found her."

Lonely Planet - Destination The Philippines - The Philippines consists of over 7,100 islands, some of them with active volcanoes. Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991 and left a moonlike landscape that tourists now visit by jeep. The Philippines are also notable for being the only Christian country in Asia. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521 and erected the first cross, claiming the land for Spain. At the time, the natives did not think much of this idea. You'll find lots of general information at this site.

Underwater Photos - Philippines - Who would have ever thought that a moray eel's eyes look like those on a cartoon fish? Normally, the first thing anyone would notice is the menacing jaws, but in Chuck Gardner's photographs the sea creature keeps its mouth shut long enough for us to notice its eyes. These brilliant pictures of what lies under the waves of the Philippines (and a few topside shots of the beaches, the palms, the dusty streets, and the landscape) are a feast for the eyes. And if you grow tired of stunning beauty, go to Chuck's home page and read about his role in the early development of the Internet and the World Wide Web in the Philippines. Don't miss this site!
