Cyber Uzbekistan - Uzbekistan, a former Soviet Republic, is a study in contrasts. The nation, standing at the crossroads of Asia, is mostly wide expanses of sandy nothingness. The capital city of Tashkent, however, despite being over 2,000 years old, is almost entirely modern. Most of the old city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1966, and the new city was built up over the ruins. There are factories, theaters, even a subway system. This Web site explores all of Uzbekistan, including photographs of Tamerlane's Tomb, the Market Place of Bukhara, and the infamous Tower of Death. Get news reports and a short list of English-Uzbek phrases here as well.

Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan - Check out the Travel and Tourism section here for facts and pictures about Samarkand, Khiva, and Bukhara, three historic sights in Uzbekistan. This country's past has witnessed visits from Alexander the Great, Marco Polo, and Genghis Khan. 1999 was officially declared "the year of women" in Uzbekistan to help raise their status and "increase of their role in state, social, and cultural construction, and democratic and spiritual renewal of society," according to an article in the News section. This effort was reinforced with an official decree.

Uzbekistan Resource Page - In early times, Uzbekistan was a thoroughfare for travelers on the Great Silk Road, a land passage from Europe to Asia, so it played an important role on the world scene. At the end of the fifteenth century, new sea routes from Europe to India were discovered, and Uzbekistan lost its strategic economic importance. It was colonized by Tsarist Russia in 1860 and became independent in 1991. Uzbekistan is now enjoying world exposure again.
