Career Guides
Health Careers Resource Center - How much do you know about careers in the health sciences? Take a quiz and see. Then learn about how to prepare for your chosen profession. This site was created by students for the ThinkQuest competition.
Independent Means - This site wants to encourage young women to follow their dreams into the career world, but anyone can take advantage of the great information here. Read interviews with famous businesswomen such as Lillian Vernon (of mail order catalog fame) and others. Check out articles to inspire you, and (coming soon) links to teen business Web pages. There's also something called Camp $tart-Up, which teaches teens business and entrepreneurial skills. It's held in several places around the country--see the schedule to find out when it will be near you.
Occupational Outlook Handbook - What are the fastest-growing industries? What occupations are adding the most jobs? What do firefighters make as a salary? These are the types of questions you'll find answered in this government publication.
Peterson's - Your family may be familiar with this resource. Have your parents and older brothers and sisters been investigating colleges, distance learning, or semester abroad programs? Peterson's is a wonderful site for that, but did you know it can also be used to find a summer job (maybe at a summer camp) and to explore the world of work?
Real Science! - Learn about lots of careers--from acoustical research engineer to wildlife psychologist. For each entry you will meet a person who actually is a park ranger or a plastic surgeon, among others. Find out what their days are like, and see if you'd be interested in becoming, say, a paleobotanist or maybe a cartographer.
Riley Guide - Resource for job seekers helps with researching careers, industries and employers. Includes collections of job lead sources and resume databases.
Starting and Running a Business - Penny, Bill, and Buck give you quick tips on starting your own business, including the creation of a business plan. There is not a lot of information here, but there is enough to give you an overview. This site was created by students for the ThinkQuest Junior competition.
Vault.com: The Workplace Network - Your secret weapon to getting your dream job. Free in-depth company & industry profiles, interview tips & much more. Visit the employee message boards to find out what they are saying.
World of Experience - Getting a job and earning money is important, but so is getting experience. Sometimes it will be experience with a hands-on skill; other times it will be a people skill, such as learning how to be a productive member of a team. This site offers suggestions on gaining experience through volunteer work, internships, extracurricular activities, and more.
