Q: Who is FamilyClick?
Created by the same people who created The Family Channel, FamilyClick is designed for parents who want their families to experience the good Internet and benefits of the online world without being subjected to offensive content, inappropriate material or predatory activity. As a leading Internet Filter Service and a destination site at which families can find top-quality online content, FamilyClick does just that and provides a service that consumers demand. Now FamilyClick is able to offer our superior suite of security solutions to families who already have another ISP. We call it FamilyClick.

Q: What technology does FamilyClick use to block offensive material?

FamilyClick uses four main tools that work to protect you from offensive or inappropriate material on the Internet.

  • Two Step, Server-Based Filtering Technology:

-Site Review Filtering: Filter checks sites against an extensive list of reviewed URLs - both filtered by technology and human-reviewed - which have been deemed to contain inappropriate content. Site review is the standard process by which most server-based filtering solutions operate.

  • - ClickReview: Second step of FamilyClick solution represents "next generation" of filtering technology. ClickReview scans pages in real time and scores each web page based on a review of the relationship and proximity of words to other words on the page using a specially built dictionary of 5,000 words/phrases. For instance, ClickReview can distinguish between a site on "sexual harassment" and "sexual pictures." However, if inappropriate word patterns are detected, the filter blocks access to the site.

  • Filtered Search Engine: FamilyClick members are free to access any search engine they choose as all results are filtered through the two-step filtering process at the appropriate access level. That way, members can continue using their favorite search engine and trust that results will come back free of offensive material.
  • Access Levels: Six different access levels are offered so that parents can determine the level of filtering most appropriate for their child. For its most restricted level, FamilyClick has developed a "Children's Playroom" that only contains sites approved by FamilyClick as appropriate for children. The Children's Playroom is 100% safe.
  • Monitored Chats: FamilyClick only provides access to chat rooms that are either monitored by adults and/or protected by ClickReview filtering technology to block out inappropriate language/content.

Q: Aren't there desktop filters out there that do the same thing?
No. Although there are a series of desktop filters on the market, they do not prove as effective or reliable as the technology used by FamilyClick. FamilyClick is the next generation of filtering technology. With our system, the filters are housed on the Company's server, therefore providing the strongest line of defense to prevent inappropriate material from reaching your desktop or creative teens from disabling the filter. Unlike desktop filters, parents will not be responsible for installation of continuous upgrades.

Q: How do the filters work?
FamilyClick uses both human review and automated processes to scan the Internet and determine which sites belong in each content category, and the sites that will be completely blocked. This massive database of sites known to contain inappropriate content is updated on a daily basis. FamilyClick utilizes new state-of-the-art technology that not only looks at key words, but also reviews the relationship and proximity of these words to other words on the page. This allows FamilyClick to distinguish between sites concerned with "breast cancer" and those on "naked breasts." Based on the access level selected by parents, a site concerned with breast cancer can be reached only by members in age appropriate tiers.

Q: Who decides what is blocked?
Many web sites contain content that is not considered offensive or objectionable, but rather intended for a mature, adult audience. FamilyClick categorizes those sites into twenty content categories. Parents can determine which of those sites they want their children to have access to and choose the corresponding access level. Click Here to view access level definitions.

Q: Can FamilyClick guarantee I will not see objectionable or inappropriate material?
Due to the dynamic nature of the Internet, no filtering product is 100% effective. However, at FamilyClick we have taken every precaution to ensure your Internet experience is protected from offensive material. If you happen to find an objectionable site, simply email us the address and we'll quickly review it and respond back to you. Likewise, if you think a site has been blocked that should not be, just let us know. Click here.

Q: Will FamilyClick work on my home network?
Yes. However there are a few things you must be aware of. If more than one person signs in concurrently, the first person to sign in will be the account and access level all are using. For example, if Son signs in at the Teen access level, and while he is signed in Dad his browser, Dad will not be prompted to sign in. Dad will be signed in automatically at Sons access level.

Further, if Son signs out while Dad is still on the Internet, Dad will get signed out. Dad will not notice this until he attempts to leave the web page he was on when Son cancelled at which time he will be prompted to sign in again.

Q: I forgot my password. What can I do?
If you do not remember your password and the password hint does not help, call support at 757-459-6300, M-F, 9am to 5 pm, ET. You will need to know the last 4 digits of the credit card used to create your account to verify you are the person responsible for this account.

Q: When I access the Internet I go straight to FamilyClick's home page without signing in. Why?
There could be several reasons for this. First, make sure the filter is Activated. You will not be prompted to sign in when the filter is Deactivated.

Another factor that causes this is when a previous member who was signed in recently closed the browser without signing out. This can happen with “always on” connections like cable or DSL. In this case FamilyClick will assume you are still the person who was signed in before and not require you to sign in, but will give you the access the other member was signed in at. To alleviate this problem, when you are done surfing go to FamilyClick's home page and click on the Sign Out link near the top. This will immediately drop your connection to our server and the next person will have to sign in.

Netscape's new version 6.0 does not support proxy servers and therefore will not require you to sign in. Currently FamilyClick is not compatible with this version of Netscape.

Q: I have installed FamilyClick on my computer, but when I put in my Member name and Password it just comes back to the sign in page. What's wrong?

There are a few things that could be causing this.

  • Yahoo Companion is an application that interferes with sign in. If you have it, it puts a "Y" on your browser. It will have to be uninstalled. Any other program that modifies or manipulates your browser will have similar effects, for example stock tickers, Hotbar, etc.
  • If you have enabled "Content Advisor" in Internet Explorer you will have to disable it. With our filtering it isn't needed anyway.
  • If you have disabled cookies in your browser you will have this problem. Cookies must be allowed for Internet and Intranet zones.
