    Testing the Filter

To help you get the most out of your FamilyClick Internet Filter membership, we have prepared this tutorial to help you get started. FamilyClick’s service is easy to install and administer and, once it’s set up, you probably won’t need to pay much attention to it.  But, spending a few minutes reading over this tutorial will help to make your FamilyClick experience more enjoyable and productive. In a few short minutes, you and your family will be enjoying the best that the Internet has to offer without worrying about subjecting your family to inappropriate and offensive material.

    Glossary of Terms

Before we get started, you should become familiar with some of the terms and concepts that FamilyClick uses. Probably the most important is the concept of the family administrator. The family administrator is normally a parent or head of household and is able to create FamilyClick accounts for other members of the family.  The family administrator decides who in the family should have access to the Internet and what type of access each family member should have.   When you signed up for FamilyClick, the member name that you selected is the family administrator.

FamilyClick has set up six age appropriate access levels ranging from completely unfiltered access to the 100% safe Children’s Playroom recommended for children under the age of seven.  FamilyClick’s access levels are fully described here . When you create accounts for each member of the family, you will select the access level that is most appropriate for that person.

To identify individual family members, the family administrator may set up an unlimited number of family member accounts. Each family member account has a unique password and serves to identify the individual.  By entering your family member account name and password when you sign on, you are ensuring that FamilyClick’s filter applies the correct level of protection.

Up to four family member accounts may also have email accounts. FamilyClick applies the same filtering technique to email as to web sites.  In addition, FamilyClick’s proprietary mail block feature may be selected to screen out messages containing offensive language.

    Functions of the Family Administrator

The Family Administrator account is like every other member account except it has the authority to create and edit member accounts, as well as deactivate and uninstall the filter. When the Family Administrator signs in they will have a link on the FamilyClick home page “Administer Family.” None of the other member accounts created by the Family Administrator will have this link.  The link is located in the upper right corner of the FamilyClick home page.

Clicking on the Adminster Family link from the home page willthe Administration Options Window. To view this window click here.

    FamilyClick Email

FamilyClick provides its members with four web-based email accounts.  The first one is automatically created for the Family Administrator when you registered. The remaining three can be assigned to any of the member accounts you create.  Your FamilyClick email address will be your member name, e.g., membername. To access your FamilyClick email account, just click on the mail icon at the top of the FamilyClick home page.  The icon looks like a picture of a mailman. If the account is setup to automatically login to mail, you won’t need to enter a username or password.  Otherwise, enter the member name and password of the FamilyClick email enabled account.

The FamilyClick email interface is very similar to other web-based email services.  You may create folders to store your mail, you can create a list containing the email addresses of family and friends and you can compose and read email messages.  FamilyClick’s email includes extensive online help.  Just click on Help to access the Help pages.

    Site Review

FamilyClick’s list of categorized websites is one of the most extensive available.  Web sites are constantly being reviewed for content and updates to this list are made on a daily basis.  However, even the most carefully maintained list may contain errors. Although rare, there is the possibility that you will encounter a website that should have been blocked.  Also, you may be denied access to a site that should not be blocked.  Because FamilyClick wants to ensure that our service is the most up to date and comprehensive filter available, we ask that you let us know when the filter isn’t behaving as you think it should.  Our site review service has been set up to make it easy for you to tell us about sites that you’ve encountered but should have been blocked as well as sites you feel are incorrectly blocked.

Report a site that should be denied. If you come across a site that you think should have been blocked, the first thing you should do is to get the complete address (URL) of the site. If you report a site to us, it is very important that you send us the full and complete url. Because some url’s may be long and complex, the easiest way to capture it is to copy-and-paste.  For those that are unfamiliar with copy-and-paste, this allows you to copy text from one location and insert it in another.

Near the top of your browser is a field labeled “Address”. Here you’ll find the url of the site. While your browser is STILL AT THE OFFENDING WEB PAGE, place your mouse cursor in the address field and click with the left mouse button.  The address should now be highlighted.  Now, without moving the mouse, click the right mouse button and, on the menu that appears, move the mouse to the word Copy and click on it with the left mouse button.  Now the address can be pasted into the site review form.

To access the site review form, go to the FamilyClick home page and click on Help at the top of the FamilyClick home page.  Next, click on Submit a Site for Review. Move your mouse cursor to the field labeled I recommend this site. Click the right mouse button and in the menu that appears move the mouse cursor to the word Paste. Now click the left mouse button and the address should appear in the text field. You can also enter an address directly in this field. Next, select either “Access should be added” if the site was incorrectly blocked or “Access should be removed” if the site should have been blocked. Then specify the FamilyClick access level that the site should be added or removed from.  Then enter your email address and any comments explaining why you think this site should be allowed or denied.  Our reviewers will investigate the site and make any changes that are required. You should expect a response by email within 2 to 3 business days.

The reporting process is easier when you have been denied access to a site.  When you attempt to access a web page that FamilyClick has denied you access, you will see the Access Denied screen. Click here to view the Access Denied Screen.

If you do not see this screen, you are not being denied access by FamilyClick. You will know for sure you are being denied access if there is a link to submit the site for review at the bottom of this screen. If you click on this link you will be taken to the Site Review form and much of the information, including the exact address, will already be filled in. Typically when a subscriber cannot access a site it is because the access level their account is set at does not allow the type of content they are trying to access.  That is why we include a link to review the access level definitions first. If a site is being denied consistent with these definitions it will not be made available.

    The FamilyClick Home Page

Because the Administration features and email must be accessed from the FamilyClick home page we set your home page in your browser to FamilyClick.  This is a convenience and not necessary, you can change it if you like. There are many other useful and important features on our home page and some of the more important ones are described here.
