Fiber helps reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Americans, however, eat only 12 to 14 grams of fiber per day, about half the recommended amount. To increase your fiber intake, forget the fiber-poor white bread and choose 100 percent whole wheat, rye, oat or multigrain breads. If the label lists two or more grams of fiber per slice, it's good source.
