Butterfly Place Cards
By Kathy Ross for Real Families, Real Fun
Expecting a crowd of family and friends for a spring party? Engage the help of your children to create butterfly place cards for the table. The materials are basic and inexpensive, and so easy to make in a matter of minutes, that every guest can have a charming personalized keepsake of your event.
Here's How:
For each place card, cut a 4-inch square of poster board or construction paper. Use colors that will complement your table setting. The more colors, the more cheer! Fold each square in half to make a basic place card that will stand. "We decorated the squares with Christine's spin art, which was a lot of fun to do," Peggy LaClair reported.
Make a butterfly for each card by painting bowtie pasta and gluing on tiny sequins or seed beads. Put the butterflies on a clean Styrofoam tray to dry (first wash the tray well with soapy water -- especially if it has had meat on it). The paint and glue will not stick to the plastic foam surface.
Cut a 3-inch piece of chenille stick to wrap around the center of the pasta to form the butterfly's body. Bend the ends of the chenille stick to form antennae.
Glue a butterfly to one side of each card. With a bright-colored marker, write the name of each guest on a card.
Mary Krabacher came up with another decorating idea. "We used markers and fabric paints to decorate them. I like the fabric paints because the kids get to have glittery things and it's not as messy for me to clean up. By the end, they were painting the butterflies with the fabric paint because the colors showed up better and there were more different colors."
TAKE IT FROM ME:
I picked out fuzzy brown pipe cleaners, thinking they would make a cute body for the butterfly. But they were too fuzzy and too wide for the small bowtie noodles. We ended up shaving them a bit with a scissors. --Betsy Bissmeyer
