Create
A Sunflower Playhouse
By Mary M. Alward
Every child loves to have their own playhouse. If you have adequate space
in your yard, you can make this unique playhouse for your child and their friends.
They will love it and the cost is minimal. You don't need so much as a piece
of wood, a hammer or a nail. What you do need, are a few basic gardening tools
and a couple of packages of sunflower seeds.
You can plant your sunflower playhouse as soon as the danger of frost has passed in the spring. You will need a package of sunflower seeds such as Mammoth, which grows to a good height. A package of Dwarf sunflower seeds will allow you to fill in the walls.
Follow the directions on the package and plant the seeds in a horseshoe shape. Be sure you choose a sunny area with well-drained soil. Heat will not damage sunflowers but over-watering or soil that retains moisture will.
The seeds will begin to send up shoots within a 21-day period. While waiting
for them to appear, ask your child to decorate the entrance and grounds around
the playhouse. Help them decorate with garden ornaments or make a "welcome sign."
A few other varieties of flowers can be planted along the walkway to the entrance.
Be sure to encourage your child to come up with some decorating ideas of their
own.
The sunflower playhouse teaches children how to care for plants and the environment
while giving them a private place to entertain friends.
