Become a Mentor

By Lisa Carpenter

Research clearly shows the tremendous difference mentors can make in the life of a child. If you are considering volunteering your time to support, encourage and listen to a child other than your own, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Am I willing to make a serious commitment to a child for an extended period of time? Mentoring is not to be taken lightly. Forming a relationship with a child then abandoning the commitment will do more harm than good. Short-term opportunities such as tutoring are available if a long-term relationship isn't possible.
  • How will mentoring affect my family? If you don't want mentoring to disrupt family time consider mentoring as a family. Invite a disadvantaged child to join family outings or special occasions.
  • Do I have the ability to empathize with others without being judgmental and allow them to make their own choices? Mentors are sounding boards, advisors, cheerleaders. They are not managers. Accept that your mentee won't always make the choices you would. Just be there for support if they suffer negative consequences.
Carefully considering the assets you have to offer a child will make mentoring a win-win situation for you and the lucky recipient of your time and talents.
