Microsoft in Education - In February 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen completed the first computer language program written for a personal computer: a BASIC interpreter for the Altair. In 1981, Microsoft shipped MS-DOS 1.0 for IBM's new personal computer. In the years that followed, MS-DOS became the standard operating system bundled with the millions of PCs shipped to businesses and individuals. In 1985, Windows was introduced to the public. Since then, Microsoft has shipped millions of copies of Windows. Needless to say, Microsoft is the largest software company in the world! Visit these K-12 pages and see what Microsoft is doing in the way of sponsoring programs to promote education, computers, and networking.

Millennium Bug - Some people are predicting chaos as the world's computers click over to the next digit after 11:59.99 P.M. on December 31, 1999. Other people think there will be some minor annoyances, but no one knows for sure what will happen. The reason for the confusion is the Y2K bug. If you don't know what that means and would like to learn more, just visit this page. It explains it all in simple language and makes suggestions on how to prepare.

One Digital Day - Created by Photojournalist Rick Smolan - In what ways has our world been transformed by the invention of the computer chip? Photojournalist Rick Smolan decided to find out. Famous for such projects as A Day in the Life of America, Smolan sent photographers off to the far reaches of the world to capture one digital day. This Web site shows many of the results, which include helping kids who can't go out in the daytime, working to save endangered species, and body sensor research to help bicycle racers go faster. You can also see how a silicon chip is made at this most interesting site.

PointCast - A new wave is out there on the Web, and it's called "push" technology. That means the information is being pushed at you rather than having you click on it to request it, or "pull" it. It's sort of like television broadcasting, except you tell them what shows you want to watch. One of the cool uses of this is customized news, including weather and sports scores. You select the types of stories you want to read and the news resources you want to have checked. You can choose to have new information pushed to you every few minutes, every hour, or every day. You can even have floating news stories or weather maps as your screen saver! You can download software to try one version of it here, but ask your parents before installing it to make sure you have the right hardware.
