Asthma Tutorial for Children and Parents - Asthma is no fun: wheezing, coughing, struggling to breathe; anyone with asthma knows what problems this illness causes. To learn about asthma, take a look at this site, provided by the Children's Medical Center of the University of Virginia. You'll see cool graphics and hear some great audio files, including what the doctor hears when listening through the stethoscope.

AsthmaMoms - AsthmaMoms is a network of families sharing answers for managing their children's asthma. It's also a community of concerned parents, reassuring one another that their deepest fears about their children's asthma can be overcome. It provides what the medical organizations can't, a supportive community of parents.

Band-Aides and Blackboards - Subtitled "When Chronic Illness...or Some Other Medical Problem...Goes to School," this site is about growing up with a medical problem. Just because kids and teens have an illness doesn't mean they aren't interested in pets, TV, music, video games, and other stuff. Meet kids with cancer, kids with cerebral palsy, kids with ADD, and many more. You'll also find poems written by kids with chronic illnesses, go on virtual hospital tours, and find out once and for all what to do about teasing.

CF-Web - Online Information About Cystic Fibrosis - It used to be that kids with cystic fibrosis, a lung disease, rarely lived long enough to become adults. That has changed. Many people with cystic fibrosis, or CF, can look forward to a long life. If you have CF or if you know someone who does, you have to take a look at this page. You'll find some easy-to-understand information about CF and also the latest news about this disease. Don't miss the active discussion list!

Facilitated Communication - This site points out that "Not being able to speak is not the same as having nothing to say." Facilitated Communication (F.C.) is a method of expression for those who have trouble speaking. This can be because of autism, Down syndrome, mental retardation, or other reasons. F.C. is controversial, and there is a lot of research currently in progress. The Facilitated Communication Institute is a center for research, training, and public education on the techniques employed.

Healthfinder - This is an easy-to-use clearinghouse of links to health information from various government and other agencies. Read an online magazine, search a database, or find a self-help or support group for topics as diverse as adoption to substance abuse. The variety will surprise you. You can locate statistics on playground injuries, information on vaccine safety, guidance on suicide prevention, and more. These are selected publications, so you're assured it's just the "good stuff"!

Just Because We Have a DisAbility Doesn't Mean We Byte - Sometimes you can see a disability, such as cerebral palsy. But others are invisible--such as bulimia or ADD (attention deficit disorder). What's it like to be "different"? Try some of the simulations to find out how your life would be if you were differently-abled. This site was created by students for the ThinkQuest competition.

KidsHome - This part of the Internet is just for kids who have cancer, HIV, and other serious illnesses. Meet other kids who hate taking their medicine. Share some stories and poems: welcome to KidsHome.

Med Help International - The Virtual Medical Center for Patients - If you or your child has been diagnosed with a particular medical condition and you'd like to talk to other families dealing with the same thing, you might try registering here in the Patient Network Support area. Let's face it--we all get sick once in a while. Sometimes it can just be annoying, and other times it can be scary. At the Med Help Library Search area, you can learn about all kinds of sicknesses. Sometimes just knowing what's happening can help you feel better. The texts are written in a nontechnical style, and relevant links to the rest of the Internet are included for each entry. There are also several medical forum areas where you can get answers from medical staff at various hospitals and well-known clinics. There is limited access for non-members, but it is free to join.
