Which plants live there? By investigating these questions, you are learning about biomes. A biome is a community of plants and animals living together in a certain kind of climate. Scientists have classified regions of the world into different biomes. Here you can explore coniferous forests, temperate deciduous forests, deserts, grasslands, rainforests, shrublands, and tundras. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to investigate biomes, then test your knowledge about the biomes by completing each mission.
Everglades Forever - Saw grass meets sea grass and freshwater mingles with salt — the Everglades joins Florida Bay. Other, more common waterways may rush to the ocean for all to see. Not the River of Grass. The Everglades is uniquely subtle and inherently complex, perhaps never more so than at its terminus. Here, water percolates through a fringe of mangroves 5 miles thick before mixing with the shallow lagoon that is Florida Bay. Here, water flows in myriad directions as it moves in a sheet of interconnected ponds, rivers and rivulets. Discover more here!
On the Prairie: Prairie Ecology - Environmental education about the prairie ecosystem. Play the prairie restoration game! Explore prairie QTVRs, try field activities, and more! The prairie is one of North America's great ecosystems and a vital habitat for many plants and animals. The prairie once spread across 1.5 million square kilometers of the Great Plains (that's seven times the size of Minnesota!)—but less than 2% of native prairie remains today.
What's It Like Where You Live? - This site explores the different biomes (desert, tundra, rainforest, taiga, grassland and temperate) and the freshwater and marine ecosystems. Come learn all about the different environments here on planet earth.
Why are Hawaii's Wetlands Vanishing? - It is a fact that Hawaii has been estimated to have less than 10% of their wetlands remaining today! Unfortunately, one of the wetland that has vanished over a period of 300 years, is one that is located in Kaelepulu Pond. Kaelepulu Pond was once a thriving wetland filled with native wildlife. It was also known as one of the few natural freshwater fishpond in the state of Hawaii. All of this has vanished and what is left is a polluted pond which is now called Enchanted Lake. Why are Hawaii's Wetlands Vanishing?? is an interactive website filled with dynamic graphics, animations, sounds, video clips, and a learning center of interactive activities. It takes the viewers on a journey back to the past when the wetland was a thriving marshland and then completes its journey to present day. You will virtually see the changes that affected the habitat and wildlife of Kaelepulu Pond.
