TopClicks -> Net Mom's Don't Miss Hot Lists -> For Kids Who Love Reading, Writing, Chats or Pen Pals

Children's Literature Web Guide - Here you will find online children's stories, information about authors and illustrators, children's book awards, and lots of lists.

Headbone Zone - This site offers lots of fun games, and in some of them you may be able to win prizes if you get the high score of the day. See if you can guess the riddles in Riddleopolis. Pick a category and answer the trivia questions--just watch out for the Randomizer, which can make your score go up or down! Then there is the Rags to Riches game, where you play the part of a big-time rock band promoter and try to rake in cash. Take your band, Groovy Gravy, on a ten-week concert tour. You set the venues and ticket prices, decide when to record new songs, and plan your advertising campaign. Don't miss the Headbone Derby, either. This popular and long-running series challenges you to travel the Net looking for clues to help you solve mysteries. There is a lot more on this site too, including monitored chat rooms. We're sure this will be one of your favorite Internet destinations!

Mighty Media Keypals Club - A part of the safe, fun Keypals Club, this is a good place to learn about others and the world around you as you practice the art of writing. If you're a student aged 14 or younger or a teacher looking for a classroom project, fill out a form with information about yourself, click a button, and ZAP! you've just joined the group. This site acts as a remailer and does not divulge your e-mail address.

Neverending Tale - Help kids and "young at heart" adults add to the stories here. Maybe you'd like to choose your own path through the 6,000 pages of The Haunted Castle. Or maybe the Space Station Delta story (1,000 pages) is more to your liking. Just start reading a story, and when you get to the bottom of the page you'll find a number of choices about what to do next. You can follow a path someone else has written, or you can easily add your own series of choices. The site is monitored for appropriate family content. One thing is for sure--there are two words you'll never find in any of these stories: The End.

Penpal Box - Part of Net-mom's favorite site, Kids' Space, the Penpal Box offers kids aged 6 to 16 the opportunity to have an e-mail friend. Actually, there is more than one box: look through the box for six and under, the box for ages seven and eight, the one for nine and ten, and so on. There's also a box for classes that want to exchange e-mail. Remember to read the FAQ for safety tips, and remember not to give your home address to anyone.

Poetry Pals Internet Poetry Publishing Project for K-12 Students - Do you like to write poetry? If the answer is "Yes!" then by all means visit this site and share your poems with other kids from all over the world. If you've never written a poem in your life and you'd like to give it a try, click on Magnetic and take a peek at an online version of "magnetic poetry." Click on the words you like and drag them around to make a poem on your computer screen. There are several of these types of games on the Net, but this one is created especially for kids.

Study Buddy: Your School Survival Connection - A wonderful collection of tips on everything from memorizing lines in a play to dealing with procrastination is in store for you at this site, plus lots of study "survival" information and a way to get a "study buddy" through a safe pen pal remailer system. It doesn't divulge your real e-mail address, so it's safe as long as you don't disclose it yourself to your pen pal. Ages 6-12, 13-17, whole classrooms, and teacher-to-teacher exchanges are encouraged.

The Prince and I - The teenage prince lives in a beautiful castle, but there's a small problem. How can he be king someday if he can't read? He needs some friends to help him learn! Become a "Friend of the Prince" (it's free), and you can submit stories to be posted at this site. Some of them are very imaginative and funny. There's even a mission you can go on to explore the village (if you can--we got lost), make your way through the forest (we got lost there, too), find the missing prince, and give him a message. (Hint: Don't play the Shockwave version; play the regular version. Make a map. If you get lost, click on Help and watch for the hands on the screen. They will point you in the right direction. If you lose the Forward button and the hand says to go forward, just click where the button used to be.) This royal site is produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

WORLD Magazine @ Nationalgeographic.com - WORLD Magazine has been a family favorite for decades. They also have a magazine just for kids, called WORLD, and this is its online version. The contents of the issues vary, but we've enjoyed articles on the space station, pirates, and movies of an avalanche in action! There are links to challenging games, plus a way for you to get an international pen pal, too.
