A Complete Guide to Digital Cameras and Digital Photography - There's a revolution happening right now in the photographic world. Film is being replaced by digital cameras, which save their pictures to memory rather than emulsion. Digital cameras have many advantages over older technologies, and since we know you'll want to learn about them, we've chosen this series of pages. There is an excellent--though long--tutorial in digital photography, a resource center and buying guide, and even a chat room so you can discuss digital cameras with others.
Camera Bag @ nationalgeographic.com - While we believe photography is about pictures and not about equipment, new technologies make it possible to show the world in new ways and help photographers make better pictures. Discover shop talk and hot tips here!
Eastman Kodak Company - You would expect Kodak to have an active home page, and they do indeed. You can find all sorts of valuable information on photography here, whether your interests lie in producing professional-quality photographs or simple snapshots. A What's New section will keep you coming back regularly. One example is the Taking Great Pictures section featuring the Top Ten Techniques for photographers to take and make good pictures. A new section allows you to upload pictures from your computer and manipulate them so it looks like your mom's coming out of a flower and your little brother is an ape. Check it out.
Exposure - A Beginner's Guide to Photography - Photography--is it technology or magic? Even if you have a nonadjustable camera, you can try some of these tips and tricks to jazz up your photos. If you do have a camera with a lot of controls on it, you can really change how the picture looks. You can learn how to set the camera so that the background blurs out of focus. This puts more emphasis on your main subjects in the foreground of the picture. On the other hand, you might want to make sure that as much of the scene as possible stays in focus. There is a special way to set the camera for that, too. You can try it all using Sim-Cam, a way-cool applet that will teach you the mysteries of f-stops and aperture by letting you set a virtual camera, take a picture, and see immediate results!
FreeFoto.Com - FreeFoto.com is one of the largest collections of free photographs for non-commercial use on the Internet.
Kite Aerial Photography - Ever wonder what the view is like from your kite as it soars high above your head? Now there's a way for you to see it. Check the tools and techniques at this site; then go fly a kite!
KODAK: Remedies For Problem Pictures - Sometimes things go wrong and you get results you didn't plan or want. Here are some of the most common problems, the reasons, and some suggested solutions.
Konica - Have you always wondered how film is made? Here's a clue: it's made in the dark! At this site, you can take a virtual factory tour and see the steps of its manufacture. There's a nice little introduction to color photography and lots of tips and tutorials from Konica.
Mark Boyle Photography-Images of Australia - Spectacular images of Australia
Oatmeal Box Pinhole Photography by Stewart Lewis Woodruff - Shhh...don't tell the manufacturers of expensive photographic equipment: you can make pictures using an old oatmeal box. This page provides step-by-step detailed instructions on how to make a pinhole camera, load it with paper film, develop the film, and make prints. Just remember to eat the oatmeal first.
One Digital Day - Created by Photojournalist Rick Smolan - In what ways has our world been transformed by the invention of the computer chip? Photojournalist Rick Smolan decided to find out. Famous for such projects as A Day in the Life of America, Smolan sent photographers off to the far reaches of the world to capture one digital day. This Web site shows many of the results, which include helping kids who can't go out in the daytime, working to save endangered species, and body sensor research to help bicycle racers go faster. You can also see how a silicon chip is made at this most interesting site.
Preserving Family Albums - If you want your great-great-great-grandchildren to see just what you looked like and how you lived, better start storing those photos properly. There's a special section at the George Eastman House home page that will tell you everything you need to know about preserving old and new photos.
Skyphoto.com - A showcase of astronomical and sky photographs by Jerry Schad.
Underwater Photos - Philippines - Who would have ever thought that a moray eel's eyes look like those on a cartoon fish? Normally, the first thing anyone would notice is the menacing jaws, but in Chuck Gardner's photographs the sea creature keeps its mouth shut long enough for us to notice its eyes. These brilliant pictures of what lies under the waves of the Philippines (and a few topside shots of the beaches, the palms, the dusty streets, and the landscape) are a feast for the eyes. And if you grow tired of stunning beauty, go to Chuck's home page and read about his role in the early development of the Internet and the World Wide Web in the Philippines. Don't miss this site!
