Gabon - The index has been created by The Norwegian Council for Africa, as part of its comprehensive effort to strengthen the knowledge of Africa and African affairs. The projects has been developed in cooperation with the information company Gazette, and wit h financial support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Gabon - Gabon is in Central Africa bordering with Congo, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea . It covers an area of 267,667sq. km with a population of 1,225,853 (July 1999 est.). Its capital city is Libreville. Learn more here!

Gabon - Ruled by autocratic presidents since independence from France in 1960, Gabon introduced a multiparty system and a new constitution in the early 1990s that allowed for a more transparent electoral process and for reforms of governmental institutions. A small population, abundant natural resources, and foreign private investment have helped make Gabon one of the more prosperous black African countries.

Lonely Planet - Destination Gabon - The famous humanitarian Albert Schweitzer did his work in Gabon. Now there's a museum and hospital in the city where he lived. Gabon is also the land of the African pygmy tribes and you can reach some areas of the jungle only by canoe. If you have any mahogany furniture in your home, it may have come from Gabon. Most of the trees there are red mahogany, a beautiful hardwood. If you thought that Florida was the only place where manatees lived, guess again. They live off the coast of this country, too. The lowland gorilla is another inhabitant and has been much researched. Are we studying the gorillas, or is it the other way around?
