Animals of the Arctic - The world has many different animals. In the Arctic are many animals that are unique to the north. Animals of the Arctic have chosen some of the most unique arctic animals there are. They have stories to read, great pictures of the animals, interesting facts to share, and some fun activities to do. On the walrus page you'll find a true story told by a Cup'ik (Choo'pik) friend. It is the story of a walrus hunt.

E-nature.com - This fabulous Audubon Field Guide site is new, and it couldn't have come at a better time, when lots of families are out exploring the natural world. Now when you find an amphibian, insect, butterfly, fish, mammal, reptile, seashell, tree, spider, or wildflower, you have an online identification source. Over 4,800 species are included! Naturally, there's an Audubon guide to birds, too. First select the category of feathered friend you spotted; there are 14 from which to choose. Was it a long-legged wader? A tree-clinger? A hawk-like bird? Say you think it may have been a hawk. Click into that part of the site and find photos and details on 35 different types of hawks and hawk-like birds: vultures, falcons, kestrels, eagles, and more. Compare photos and field marks and--Hey, it's a red-tailed hawk!

Gaggle - Gaggle is a fun game that will teach you the special words used for groups of animals. For example, do you know what to call a group of bears? Or a group of larks in flight? By the end of this game you will!

GORP - Okefenokee - National Wildlife Refuge - Between northern Florida and southern Georgia lie the 700 acres of the Okefenokee Swamp, home to critters as diverse as coral snakes, alligators, and--yes--tourists! You'll be amazed at the dark, mirrorlike water of the swamp, with its overhanging trees draped in swaying strands of Spanish moss. Explore old Seminole canoe routes and learn about the fragile ecology of this very special area. Just remember, don't turn your back on that gator!

J. J.'s Adventure: A Baby Gray Whale's Rescue and Release - J. J. the gray whale made lots of news in 1997. In January, she was found on the beach at the tender age of seven days old. Although very sick, she was rescued, cared for, and eventually released back to her home in the Pacific Ocean. Three schoolgirls loved the story so much they decided to make a Web page and enter the ThinkQuest Junior contest. Guess what? They won Best of Contest for 1998! View lots of great photos and learn how J. J. got her name at this terrific site.

Kokoto - Even little kids will be able to click on the stones and see what animal hides behind them. Can you find two matching animals? If yes, the pictures are circled, and you'll learn some facts about that creature. If no, the pieces are turned back over, and you can select two more. This game takes concentration, which is another name for it.

National Wildlife Federation's for Kids! - Looking for projects and information on a variety of environmental subjects? Check these out: water, wetlands, endangered species, and our public lands. Sound good? Each topic includes general background information, activities, fun facts, and a glossary of terms. How about a riddle from Ranger Rick? Or a challenging game? And perhaps your class or family could become an EarthSavers Habitat Helper--find out what other kids are doing to clean up and restore habitat for wildlife.

Rainforest Alliance - Keep up with current news about the rain forest and those who are trying to save it at the "Rainforest Alliance" level of this site. Below is the URL for the kids' section, where you can learn about all kinds of frogs, make rain forest crafts, print out coloring pages, and find out where to get more information on everything from leaf cutter ants to medicinal plants.

Raising the Mammoth-Discovery Online - An expedition to raise an intact mammoth from the Siberian permafrost, complete with detailed material on the century-old search for mammoths.

Sea-Monkey Central - It's "Instant Life"--it's "Sea-Monkeys"--it's a great marketing gimmick! Take the lowly brine shrimp (also known as live fish food) and develop a foolproof way to raise herds of them in a tiny plastic "zoo" aquarium. Advertise in the backs of comic books and sell the little critter eggs for a really cheap price. Everything you'd ever want to know about these fun but tiny pets is here, including terrible jokes, such as this one: Question: What do you call a Sea-Monkey tank that's been spilled on your sister's favorite doll? Answer: Shrimp on the Barbie.

Sounds of the World's Animals - Everybody knows that a dog's bark is "woof-woof," right? Well, not everybody knows that! A French dog says, "ouah ouah ," while a Japanese dog says, "wanwan ." In Sweden, the dogs say, "vov vov ," and in the Ukraine, you'll find them saying, "gaf-gaf ." This is a Web page full of what the world thinks various animals sound like. There's an audio sound file for some animals, so you can hear and decide for yourself which language "says it best."

Terry the Prairie Dog Home Page - Follow Terry the Prairie Dog and discover facts about the plants and animals that live on the tallgrass prairie in the American Midwest. This page was created by fourth graders for the CyberFair `98 contest. You'll love the animated drawings the kids made to help you learn about this ecosystem. They do take a long time to load, but it's worth the effort. Can you guess who might want to start a prairie fire?

The Animal Planet - Is your favorite TV channel the Animal Planet? If so, you'll love their website. Filled with info and pictures of the creatures of the world, and of course, the Croc Hunter's recent exploits.

The Living Africa - Did you know that blue duikers, a type of small antelope, return to the same area each night to sleep--a rare habit unique to this species? Or that the people in Dibouti are Muslim, while many in Malawi are Catholics? There's much more to discover about Africa at this site including information about its cities, schools (a typical day at school), ethnic groups, and languages.

Treehomes - Trees are beautiful for us to see, but they are also homes for many animals and birds. Explore this small grove and see what you find hidden among the trees. We found at least 13 things, including a red-headed woodpecker and a little mouse.

World Wildlife Fund Global Network-Kids - The Kids and Teachers area provides educational and fun materials for users of all ages. From WWF Fact Sheets, to teachers guides, to pointers to the fun areas of the site for the younger cohorts, this section has it all.

Zoboomafoo - Can you match the animal to the snack he prefers? Can you guess the mystery animal? Try the Finding Mommy adventure: look at the baby animal, and then roll your cursor over parts of the picture to hear various animal sounds. When you think you have matched the right mommy sound to the baby, click on the baby and drag it towards Mom. Were you right? If not, try again. After that, relax with some coloring pages from this PBS television series.
