TopClicks -> Kidzone -> Music -> Interactive Music

Energy in the Air - Let the conductor be your guide as you stumble through the forest of music stands to meet various parts of the orchestra. Let's try the brass section. It says here that trumpets used to be over seven feet long! Thank goodness they changed that before they invented marching bands. You'll read about the history of each instrument, see its range on the musical scale, and even hear sound clips from famous works featuring the instrument. There's also a section on the science of sound. Did you know that sound waves look different for each instrument? This site was created by students for the ThinkQuest Junior competition.

Gamebrain - There are games, activities, puzzles, music, animated movies/stories, chat, and a visual English-Spanish dictionary. While you wait for games to load, there are small, quick games to play. You can sign in as a guest, but registration is required to be able to access all features of the site.

Hooked on Symphonics - Check this site if you need a quick introduction to the symphony orchestra. There's a little bit about many of the instruments, plus links to a glossary so you can look up unfamiliar terms. Read biographies of six famous composers. The best part of the site is the guided tour to the famous musical version of "Peter and the Wolf," by Sergei Prokofiev. Listen to each character's musical theme, and you'll soon be able to identify flutes, bassoons, French horns, and other instruments. This site was created by students for the ThinkQuest competition.

Hop Pop Town - Young children can enhance their imagination by combining sound with pictures. Record a song, experiment with sounds, write a story and have fun.

How MP3 Files Work - Everyone seems to be talking about MP3 files these days, and how easy it is to share quality recordings over the Internet. MP3 is short for the audio level 3 compression standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). Basically, the MP3 standard defines a way to reduce the size of audio files without significant loss of sound quality. Want to find out how it all works? Learn how to download MP3 files to your own computer and also create (or "rip") your own files from your own CDs. Sharing copyrighted music via MP3 is-to say the least-controversial. Discover the MP3 revolution at this site.

Jazz Improvisation - How does jazz work? This site can tell you. Not for performers only, these lessons on jazz theory and practice fill you in on history, fundamentals, and playing with others. You'll get new insights into the heart of jazz. Also take a look at the shorter Jazz Improvisation Primer. The rest of this site is an entire jazz library. Other links are to Pop and Commercial Music, Jazz Education resources, and World Music, where you'll find Chinese, Russian, and Bulgarian sounds, and the Mbira Home Page. Also take a look at European jazz, more photos, and jazz literature. Bring a sandwich and spend the day here.

Kids' Space - This internationally recognized and award-winning site will become one of your favorite Internet destinations because it has something for everyone. Older kids might want to see KSC (Kids' Space Connection) to visit lots of home pages created by other kids--and they can list theirs here, too. Toddlers will love the detour to HPT (Hop Pop Town) to try out the many interactive musical experiences. But Kids' Space itself is everybody's home page. You can submit audio files of your music or digital drawings and hear and see what other children around the world have done, too. The Story Book is where kids write their own stories, using the pictures and themes provided. There is even a beanstalk that keeps growing each month in the Craft Room. Pick an artwork and create a story for it, or choose a story already written and draw a picture for it. All commands at this site include pictures with them, so even the youngest child (who may be still developing reading skills) can enjoy this creative and fun learning experience.
