Geographia.com-Asia - It is always dangerous to compare the world's continents. Their charms rest in the eye of the traveler, and no two travelers or continents are alike. When faced with the great continent of Asia, however, it is tempting to step back and look at the numbers. Asia represents almost one-third of earth's land mass. Its holds the world's highest point, Mt. Everest, and the lowest point outside of uninhabitable Antarctica, the Dead Sea. It is home to both the largest and deepest lakes on Earth, the Caspian Sea and Lake Baikal. Out of the twelve longest rivers on Earth, seven wind through Asia. All the world's major religions originated in Asia, and two out of every three people on Earth live there.
Government of India Tourist Office - This official, comprehensive site will teach you about Indian politics, sports, clothing, art, dance, music, festivals, foods, films, history, and more. For example, did you know that 15 national languages are recognized by the Indian constitution? These languages together have over 1,600 variations or dialects! This site also provides information on the anthem, flag, and national symbols of India. The national bird is the peacock. Once hunted, they are now a protected species. The national fruit is the mango, and the national tree is the banyan. India's saffron, green, and white flag features a central Dharma Chakra, known as the wheel of law.
Hong Kong - City of Life - Festivals are the best in Hong Kong! Start with the Chinese New Year in Events and Festivals. Keep going--there's always a reason to celebrate! This site has videos of the people, city, and even the food. Be sure to click on "The Wonder of the Day" for something new.
Israel Infotour - Here's a great site for people who want to travel to Israel--either by air or by modem! Visit all the cities of this fascinating country. Japan Travel Updates - This official site is for those who need travel information and suggested places to visit in Japan. You will learn a lot about various Japanese cities at this site, but you can also find out about theme parks! Try Nikko Edo Mura if you want to experience historic Japan with ninjas and shogun generals. Or maybe you'd prefer the Fuji-Q amusement park. Besides the thrilling rides, a tamer Thomas the Tank Engine attractiond in 1998.
Kazakhstan - This site offers a broad look at many aspects of Kazakhstan. Visit the ancient land of the Kazakhs, admire some traditional Kazakhstan jewelry, and enjoy some of the many recipes listed. While you're here, view some of their interesting architecture, visit some of the cities, and don't forget to read about the variety of wildlife which inhabits the mountains, deserts, and rivers.
Kazakhstan - Visit Taraz, one of the ancient cities standing on the "Great Silk Road" (look in Geography/Tourism), and other places of interest here. Read about Kazakhstan's libraries, museums, and theatres. In the Culture section you can look at some of their traditional arts and crafts, and learn about the ancient yurta , a tent-like structure that is covered with felt. Other areas include government information, the economy, science, and news.
Korea Window - Explore South Korea in detail. The Culture and the Arts section is particularly interesting, featuring traditional handicrafts and music. There is much more to discover at this site about Korean society, economy, history, and art, so plan to stay awhile.
Lonely Planet - Destination Brunei - Brunei was once a larger country, with Borneo and part of the Philippines under its control. The British were largely responsible for shrinking Brunei's territory since their arrival in the seventeenth century. Oil was discovered there in 1929. A revolt in 1962 eventually led to its independence in 1984. Today, this Muslim country (properly called Negara Brunei Darussalam), although rich from its oil exports, is isolated and underdeveloped.
Lonely Planet - Destination Cambodia - Imagine being a teenager with the responsibility of ruling a whole country. That is what happened in 1941, when the French installed 19-year-old Prince Sihanouk on the Cambodian throne. King Sihanouk ruled this war-torn country up through 1995 and is now referred to as the Father of Cambodia. This is a great place to look for quick facts-at-a-glance about the history, culture, economy, and environment of Cambodia, along with a photo slide show. The map of the country clearly shows the major mountain ranges surrounding Cambodia on three sides, its only major port of Kampot in the south, and the dominant influence of the waters of the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers.
Lonely Planet - Destination Hong Kong - Hong Kong harbor has lots of junks. No, not the trashy kind of junk. A junk is a type of boat with a sail that is also a home for thousands of people in Hong Kong. Hong Kong at night is like fireworks in the sky; it's very spectacular. Read about some of the local customs--for example, you should never leave any rice uneaten at a meal (be a member of the "clean plate club" here!) and be sure not to place your chopsticks vertically in your bowl; we'll leave it up to you to find out why.

But hey, don't fall off that mountaintop! Some of the tallest peaks in the world are in India, and it's a long way down. There is a lot more to see. View the colorful temples, and see if you can find out why so many small flags are flying in the wind.

Lonely Planet - Destination Kazakhstan - Half the size of the United States, Kazakhstan is largely a desolate country in central Asia potentially rich in minerals but with only a few cities. Its land is scarred from Russian rocket and nuclear testing that has taken place since the 1940s. The country has not fared well since its separation from Russia.
Lonely Planet - Destination Myanmar (Burma) - Although Myanmar (Burma) is trying to promote tourism, many people are refusing to travel there, because reports of an oppressive government, slave labor, and other disturbing stories have surfaced. You should be aware of the issues. This page collects not only general information on the country but also links to sites where you can learn more about the Free Burma movement. A caution to parents: The Myanmar (Burma) story is violent.

Lonely Planet - Destination Sri Lanka - Where would you go to wash your elephant? The bathtub? No, it would leave footprints in the soap, and besides, your parents would never understand. The automatic car wash is probably out of the question, too--think of all the elephant wax you'd need. The only solution is to take your elephant to Sri Lanka, where they have elephant baths. You can see a picture of one at this site ("Jumbo bath") and find out lots of other interesting facts about the country of Sri Lanka, including information about the ethnic unrest there.
Lonely Planet - Destination Tajikistan - Following its independence in 1991 when the Soviet Union fell apart, Tajikistan fell into a civil war for six years until a peace agreement was signed in 1997. Political unrest still remains today, and foreigners are highly discouraged from traveling here. Little is known about early Tajik history. Successive inhabitation by the Sogdians in the first century B.C., and then the Turks, Persians, Arabs, Mongols, and Russians has created a mixed hertitage.

There's even a recommended reading section with books, articles, and travel guides on Thailand. Just watch out for the land mines on the Cambodian border--read the warning here.
Lonely Planet - Destination The Philippines - The Philippines consists of over 7,100 islands, some of them with active volcanoes. Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991 and left a moonlike landscape that tourists now visit by jeep. The Philippines are also notable for being the only Christian country in Asia. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in 1521 and erected the first cross, claiming the land for Spain. At the time, the natives did not think much of this idea. You'll find lots of general information at this site.
Lonely Planet - Destination Vietnam - Since Vietnam wasd up to American travelers a couple of years ago, it has become a popular tourist destination. Vietnam's French and Asian traditions blend to make it the home of unique contrasts. Ho Chi Minh City (once known as Saigon) is full of hustling, bustling street vendors and exotic shops and peaceful, scenic pagodas and cathedrals. Pakistan - A Tourist's Paradise - The world's earliest human settlements--the prehistoric Indus Valley Civilization--are known to have started in Pakistan. Most of this site is partitioned according to province. In each section, you'll find information about the province's history, culture, religion, government, and architecture, complete with pictures.
Philippine Department of Tourism Official Website - This site contains tidbits on eleven different tourist destinations with some brief general information. Be sure to check out the beautiful Image Postcards that you can download (unfortunately, the full-sized postcards all have logos covering much of the picture). Additional facts can be found at http://www.tourism.gov.ph/ , the official Department of Tourism site.
Singapore Infomap - This site introduces and indexes Singapore resources on the Internet. You may find everything you need in "One-Minute Singapore." It has links to basic information on the country's climate, people, education, government, and more. The "country profile" section has in-depth information on many of the same topics. If you have more time, delve into the many links related to sports and recreation, history, culture, business, and tourism. There are links to current newspaper articles as well. Parents: Off-site links have not been checked.
Visit Maldives - Only about 200 of the 1,190 small islands of the Maldives are inhabited. This country, located off the southern tip of India, is a favorite of tourists, but natives rarely mingle with the visitors. Many islands are covered with beautiful tropical vegetation and palm trees. Others are only sand and coral.
