BestFares.com - Best Fares offers a generous array of free travel bargains. They check hundreds of sources each month to bring you one-stop shopping for great deals: Snooze You Lose fares, Internet offers, late-breaking travel news, and much more.

Bloomburg.com - Large compendium of global, business, and financial news. Read articles, and see graphs and photos.

CNN Interactive - CNN, the 24-hour news channel, has made it easy and fast to get the news of the moment over the Internet. And it's in a multimedia format that brings you lots more than words. You'll find that QuickTime movies and sound turn up in the most amazing places! Look for them in stories about belly-flop contests as well as space shuttle dockings. And if you want to know more about the news CNN is covering, you can link to thousands of newspapers, magazines, and broadcasts from all over the world. Don't forget that CNN covers entertainment, sports, style, and other fun stuff. Check out Billboard's weekly Top Ten list, featuring sound clips of each popular song. It's in the Entertainment section; then click on Music.

E&P Online Media Directory - has been around for a long time, providing information for the news industry. Now they've got this great online media directory for you to use! You will find associations, city guides, magazines, newspapers, news services and syndicates, and radio and television Web sites listed both geographically and by media type. Check it out and find the newspaper in your community, the community where you used to live, or the community you're moving to. If you've got a homework assignment about current events in, say, Bermuda, you can read the daily news from local newspapers there.

Electric Library Personal Edition - "The Electric Library currently contains 5,277,563 newspaper articles, 697,457 magazine articles, over 419,011 book chapters, 1,523 maps, 136,419 television and radio transcripts, and 104,894 photos and images!" There's also an encyclopedia, Monarch Notes, and a fair number of reference books. You can search topics for free, but if you want to read the full text of the articles, you must become a member. There's a 30-day free trial offer.

ESPN.com - Hey, sports fans! If you're really into sports, then you probably already know about ESPN, the all-sports cable TV network. They do the same great job on their home page as they do on their network. This site offers up-to-the-minute sports news, scores, and game summaries. Let's say your favorite team is in Seattle and you live all the way across the country on the other coast. Chances are, it's a pain in the neck to get the latest news, stats, and player profiles on your favorite team. Hey, relax. Tune in and get it all right here: college, amateur, pro. They cover it all, and they let you talk back. After all, you have to make your opinion known, right?

How to Analyze News - This site has a tremendous amount of very solid information, as well as suggestions on how to get kids thinking about news stories. Who gathered the information, who reports it, what's the slant, who sponsors the program--all these things and more should be evaluated when we hear a news story. Make sure your kids are media-aware! Visit the main level of this site for more.

How To Save Social Security - Brookings research links relating to Clinton's budget proposal for Social Security for FY 2000.

Korean Central News Agency - If you want to know what the news is in North Korea, this site will provide today's stories as well as an archive of old articles. What's interesting is that there is no news at all about anything bad, such as the famine that has swept the country in the last few years.

Nappaland - The Nappaland.com webzine provides a variety of resources for Internet readers, including: Media Minutes for Families: A monthly column that explores current media trends and products, Nappaland's MovieSpot: A monthly column that offers parent-focused reviews of current theatrical movie releases, and Nappaland Kids' Klick: A monthly feature of stories and articles for kids to encourage positive reading habits in children.

News Index - News Index claims to be the most comprehensive news search engine on the planet. It's time for a current events paper on the situation in the Middle East, says your teacher. This is the place to start. You will find breaking news stories from more than 300 newspapers and news sources from around the world. When we typed in the words "Middle East," there were 2,003 articles from which to choose!

PointCast - A new wave is out there on the Web, and it's called "push" technology. That means the information is being pushed at you rather than having you click on it to request it, or "pull" it. It's sort of like television broadcasting, except you tell them what shows you want to watch. One of the cool uses of this is customized news, including weather and sports scores. You select the types of stories you want to read and the news resources you want to have checked. You can choose to have new information pushed to you every few minutes, every hour, or every day. You can even have floating news stories or weather maps as your screen saver! You can download software to try one version of it here, but ask your parents before installing it to make sure you have the right hardware.

RealGuide - News - Parental advisory: Please preview this site. Now hear this! The news, that is. Yep, this site's for people who'd rather listen to the news than read it. You're going to want to grab your own version of the Real Audio player (it's free, courtesy of Real Networks) once you check out all the cool stuff you can hear. The Real Audio player software enables users to access Real Audio programming and play it back in an on-demand audio stream, which means you don't have to download those gigantic files first, which gets a little boring. Not to be missed is the news from French, Italian, and Japanese public broadcast networks (not to mention National Public Radio), political speeches from C-SPAN, the evening news from ABC World News Tonight, and lots more.

Swimnews Online - Do you swim? We're not talking about an occasional wade through the baby pool. We're talking about competitive swimming. You know: pruny looking fingers, webbed toes, red eyes, and gills. If that's you, then you need to see this online magazine. Virtually every major swim meet in the world is here, and the results are updated regularly. You'll find features on the world's best swimmers, and all the world records are here, too. Links? You bet. This is the diving platform for your lane.

UPI - United Press International - A news organization with a proud and colorful history going back 91 years, United Press International is focused on being a leader in the Knowledge Age. The company provides news and information for broadcast, print, online and a variety of other subscribers.

Yahoo! Get Local - All this national and international news is sometimes overwhelming! If you just want to focus on your local community news, this is the place. You need to set up a profile the first time you use it. You have to type in the name of your city, and sometimes your ZIP code, but that's about it. Then, every time you go to this page, it will bring up your local news. This may include links to your local TV station's and newspaper's Web sites, local team scores, movie listings, special event calendars, weather, and lots more. If you ever want to change to another city, a button at the top of the page will let you do that.
