Puppets & Muppets
Henson.com - The Jim Henson Company - The main Henson page is a hoot. There's an online look at the Creature Shop, video clips of Jim Henson at work, and a trip to the company store. But be sure to take the Muppets link. Before this sited, while it was under construction, this was the message displayed on the screen: "Hi Ho, Kermit the Frog here. We are busy building Muppets.com, the first Virtual Reality, 5D, secured-socket, fully encrypted, dynamically interactive, bearly browserable, community based, Java-enabled, highly compliant, platform independent, frog-functional, scalable, backwardly compatible, indefinitely online, gif-animated, e-deliverable, sequentially tagged, third generation, CGI reciprocal, porcine promoted, plug-and-play, state of the art Web site. Unfortunately, last night Animal ate our hard drive. We're working hard to get that fixed. But for now, you can read all about us." Check out what they came up with after Animal coughed up the hard drive.
Muppets.com - Come inside for a visit with all your favorite muppets!! Find all sorts of exciting show-biz scoops and sneak peeks along with bios of your favorite Muppets. Visit Fozzie's Galactic Outpost, explore the Muppet Labs, groove in Animals Bandstand and so much more!!
Stage Hand Puppets' Activity Page - Puppet theater requires a stage, puppets, and a play. Read puppet plays other kids have written, or try writing your own and submitting it here. There are also lots of ideas and patterns for making puppets from scrap and other materials around your house. You'll find performance tips, hand-shadow directions, and even information on ventriloquism.
Strings, Springs, and Finger Things - Here's the scoop on puppets--some string, some spring, some finger things! That's not all. You will learn about the various methods of puppetry and see examples of each. There are puppets from many countries. For example, bunraqu is a traditional form of Japanese puppetry, native to Osaka. Very large and elaborately jointed and costumed figures are operated in full view of the audience. It takes a whole team of people to manipulate these puppets. Then there are water puppets, which originated in Imperial China. A water puppet consists of two parts: the body, which stands out of the water, and the support, which acts as a floater. The entire production takes place in the water, and the puppeteer stands up to his waist. Want to learn more? Let your fingers take you to this site.
The Puppetry Home Page - Looking for a place to buy fake fur, foam rubber, and neoprene to build your own original puppets? Check the resources listed here. If your puppet-making aspirations are more along the old sock variety, you'll find links and patterns to help with that, too. Explore puppetry traditions around the world, from the Punch and Judy shows of France to the shadow puppetry of Asia. There are also links to ventriloquism resources on the Web, so you can learn to throw your voice in cyberspace, where no one can see your mouth move!
