Broadcasting History - Can you imagine riding in a car without hearing tunes on the radio? Car radios weren't introduced until 1930. Radios were expensive back then, and not every home had one. In 1929, home radios were $120 each, which was a fortune! Before 1935, most radios broadcast only live music. After that, stations got record players and began spinning 33 1/3 or 78 rpm records. You say you don't remember records? Ask your parents about them. Radio plays were big, too: one of the biggest early successes was a western called The Lone Ranger , and one of its sponsors was Cheerios. Old Time Radio - Many years ago, before cable TV, even before any TV, there was radio--not just talk and music on the radio, like today, but radio "shows." Radio shows were like today's TV shows, without the pictures. People enjoyed listening to comedies, dramas, mystery thrillers, and variety shows. It was a whole different kind of radio, at a whole different time, and now it is known as "old-time radio." This page is entertainment and history all rolled into one, and it is packed with information, pictures, and sounds. Hear clips from such radio greats as The Great Gildersleeve . Voice of America - "The news may be good. The news may be bad. We shall tell you the truth." That's what announcer William Harlan Hale said during the first VOA broadcast, February 24, 1942. In some places around the world, news and information is controlled by the government. Sometimes it is hard for citizens to find out the truth of a situation, in the face of broadcasts and newspapers from controlled news media.
