Chat Danger - Childnet International sponsored website giving advice to parents and children on teenage safety on the internet. How to avoid sexual abuse on the web. Advice on child welfare, how parents can better protect their children. What industry, governments and police can do. Understand the issues and the simple safety steps you can take to help keep children safe. Entering a chat room is like eavesdropping on a school playground: there may be more than one conversation going on at once or one big shouting match.

Childnet International - Childnet is working with many others to ensure that children are protected from dangers on the Internet which can be grouped under 3 broad headings of Content, Contact and Commercialism. On this website you can read about the research they have undertaken (see "Netaware" programme) their public awareness work (see Chat Danger and Netbenefit ) as well as the strategic INHOPE work they have established among Hotlines across Europe improving the way that child pornography is reported and effectively tackled.

Children in Cyberspace - Many children are skilled navigators of the vast reaches of cyberspace. They are comfortable using computers and are fascinated by the wide world of information and images that can be explored at the touch of a keystroke. It is estimated that nearly 10 million youths are online now, or 14% of U.S. children. The Internet offers children and youth tremendous opportunities to explore new ideas, visit foreign lands, meet other children, and participate in challenging games. But like the real world, aspects of the virtual world can be dangerous and harmful to children. Parents, teachers and other guardians cannot always be on hand to prevent children and youth from visiting web sites with harmful or objectionable content. Nor can they always be available to discuss with children what they are encountering in the online world. The words "harmful" and "objectionable" can be interpreted in many ways. Such terms are often used to describe pornography, profanity, and hate speech. They can also be used to describe advertising messages and images that are highly manipulative of children. This online guide discusses both types of content. It is divided into two sections: first, the privacy implications of online marketing; and second, objectionable material such as pornography, hate speech and profanity. The guide provides resources for parents and teachers to learn more about the issues so they can prepare young Internet users to maximize the benefits of cyberspace and minimize the dangers.
