This site is in the parents part of the book because some of the programs are about health topics and relationships, which you need to preview for your kids.

Center For Media Education - Here's an interesting statistic. By age 70, most Americans will have spent ten years of their lives watching TV. Kids watch an average of three to four hours of TV every day. According to this site, "By the time children complete elementary school, the average child will witness more than 100,000 acts of violence on TV, including 8,000 murders. These numbers double to 200,000 acts of violence and 16,000 murders by the time they graduate from high school." What effect does watching this violence have on kids? Read about it at this site. Did you know the Federal Communications Commission requires TV stations to air three hours of educational and informational programming per week? Roots - During the winter of 1977, a powerful miniseries appeared on television. It was a dramatization of Alex Haley's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Roots. The series of programs traced Haley's ancestors back to the days of slavery. The compelling story made it the most-watched miniseries of all time, with 130 million viewers during its initial telecast. Although Americans had learned about slavery in school, this was the first time it was portrayed in such close and personal detail, and adults and kids all over the country couldn't wait until the next show to see what happened to Kunta Kinte and the other characters. This online exhibit gives a chronological background and introduction to slavery in America as well as a listing of inventions by African Americans.
