Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - If you're a movie fanatic, don't miss the Official Guide to the Academy Awards, designed to help you explore Oscar nominees and winners, past and present. There are pictures and lots of information on many of them. You may be surprised to find out that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does a lot more than just give out awards. They have an amazing movie history library, too. They also sponsor Student Academy Awards, designed to recognize excellence among college students enrolled in film courses throughout the United States.
American Booksellers Book of the Year (ABBY) Award - Book of the Year (ABBY) Awards are given each year in the adult and children's book categories that ABA bookstore members most enjoyed recommending to their customers during the previous year.
Awards and Notables from the Association for Library Service to Children - There's no doubt that librarians know tons about books. Every year, children's librarians in the American Library Association give two awards to authors and illustrators of the best books for kids. The Caldecott Medal goes to the best illustrator of a children's book, and the Newbery Medal is given to the author of the finest kids' book. Children's Book Awards - Every year, thousands of books are written for kids. Most of the books are good, but trying to decide which books to borrow from the library can be difficult. Fortunately, several organizations pick the finest books for children each year. These books are judged by a variety of criteria, including best for young children, best for elementary school kids, and so on. Some of the awards for the best children's books are listed on the Internet, and you can find convenient links to many of those lists here. Besides the Caldecott and the Newbery Awards, you'll find the Coretta Scott King Award and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal winners. Emmy Awards - Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - Have you ever heard the song by Bruce Springsteen, "Fifty-Seven Channels and Nothin' On"? Sometimes nothing good seems to be on TV, but many good shows are available. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences selects some of the best programs and gives the winning shows and actors an award called an Emmy. Giverny Book Award - This award is given annually in April to the author and to the illustrator of the book selected as the best children's science picture book. Currently based at Louisiana State University. The Giverny Award is an annual award established in 1998 by Dr. James H. Wandersee and Dr. Elisabeth Schussler for the 15 Degree Laboratory, currently based at Louisiana State University. The Laboratory performs research on visual cognition in biology, visual approaches to learning biology, and the graphic represention of biological knowledge.
Golden Globe Awards - The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presents the official Golden Globe Award website. The Golden Globe Awards has saluted some of the most vibrant, entertaining and frequently though-provoking cinematic stories over the years.
GRAMMY Awards - Music is a universal language. Everybody likes music, whether it's pop sounds, rock and roll, rap, or R&B. Most music we listen to is recorded, either on tapes, CDs, the radio, or TV. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences is an organization of recording specialists who vote on the best recordings each year. National Book Awards - The National Book Awards have become the nation's preeminent literary prizes, and The National Book Awards Ceremony and Dinner the most important event on our literary calendar. Today, the Awards are given to recognize achievements in four genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature. The Winners, selected by five-member, independent judging panels for each genre, receive a $10,000 cash award and a crystal sculpture.
Nobel Foundation - Alfred Nobel was a Swedish-born inventor and international industrialist, most famous for the invention of dynamite. He died in 1896. His will founded the Nobel Prizes in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, physiology/medicine, and peace. Since 1901, they have been presented to the winners (called Nobel laureates) at ceremonies on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. Most of the prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway. Since 1969, the Sveriges Riksbank (Bank of Sweden) Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel has been awarded in Stockholm at the same time. Pulitzer Prizes - Joseph Pulitzer was an American newspaper publisher known for his innovative ideas and bold reporting style. When he died, his will established the Pulitzer Prizes. The first ones were awarded in 1917. Each year, achievements in American journalism, letters, drama, and music are recognized. Fourteen prizes are given in journalism. The prizes in "letters" are for fiction, history, poetry, general nonfiction, and biography or autobiography. There are also prizes for drama and music.
